g~man
Can anyone tell me if i can play MKV's though the media center ext, on xbox360 i have tryed but the files do not show up. I have heard that you can. Using Windows7 RC 7100. windows 7 does support .mkv but i dont know if it works via wmc to 360 i hope microsoft incoroprates .mkv support in the next update (its my biggest wish for the next update) the .mkv camp and microsoft are working together for windows 7 so things are looking hopeful. im also hearing the zune hd has .mkv support so i guess we'll just have to keep our fingers crossed (otherwise bills email address is gonna get bombarded :D) Edited August 17, 2009 by g~man

BajiRav
i remember early version's of windows7, pre RC1 i could play MKV's. But now NO!, why would they change this! After you start MCE on Xbox 360, go back to your PC - fire up WMP, right-click on the MKV and then Play To > Xbox 360. This should transcode the file. *I think*

bob21
MKV was never natively supported in 7 you probably had the Crap Crap Crap Pack installed anyway , . MKV places completely unnecessary restrictions on what device can playback the files (NO Portable Media Player/PDA/PDA Phone/DVD Player/Network Streamer fully supports it) so its pretty much PC only . And even then its horribly supported on windows and if you do find a device capable of playing MKV (TwonkyVision) weather the file will playback is more miss than hit with audo-sync issues forced subtitles. All of the above can be avoided by taking the contents and putting them inside the mpeg container which achieves the exact same results in seconds with none of the issues above . So yes it is by any definition of the word utter crap and people should be told that they have a way to liberate their collections of this rubbish container and playback they're files on whatever device they want to . http://www.videohelp.com/download/mkv2vob2451.exe < Muxes MKV to universally playable MPEG files in seconds And just for anyone thinking of purchasing a network media player like popcornhour and expecting flawless MKV playback think again even if your device can handle the container weather it can actually play the file is hit and miss. And even if the file plays get ready for audiosync hell and forced Chinese subtitles . Save yourself a lot of time and effort , use MKV2Vob. The result is an MPEG which has the same resolution, bitrate and filesize as the MKV file with none of the horrendous compatibility issues . Higher quality indeed... Avoid, Avoid, Avoid . bob21
Yes, the container has nothing to do with quality hell your 350mb mkv would be perfectly happy in the avi container. Edited August 18, 2009 by bob21
undu
Wow, you really need to relax, MKV does not place any restrictions, hardware vendors do, complain to them and not the container, an I won't avoid void avoid, because I use it for PC palayback, thank you, and I'm not even using cccp nor any other codec pack! Udedenkz
MKV container is awesome - small size, multiple audio tracks, subtitles, multiple video tracks. People should stop using AVI files - it is an old format that should die off like older versions of Windows. MKVs are like M2TS and MP4 files in terms of codecs... bob21
No reason to expect OEM's to support it when its not an ISO standard and supported content can change at a moments notice , Its been 6 years and new containers have leapfroged MKV in terms of hardware support like MP4 and yet hardware support . Its not going to change. MKV container is awesome - small size, multiple audio tracks, subtitles, multiple video tracks. People should stop using AVI files - it is an old format that should die off like older versions of Windows. Nothing special about any of the above AVI supports 256 streams per file, The smaller size quote is complete nonsence as the container has nothing to do with file size its the h.264 video we have to thank for that. Muxing to the universaly supported and newer MP4 container is the way to go ATM , even if you have to go outside the iso spec for AC3 its better than no spec at all . SnoopZ
If it hasn't already been said before you can play MKVs on the Xbox 360 through Media Centre Extender and windows 7 without transcoding. All you need is the Divx Tech Preview installed then MKVs will showup on the Xbox. However i don't think they play if the MKVs have DTS sound. http://labs.divx.com/mkvwin7preview

An even easier option : If your MKVs are H.264+AC3, then you can simply change the container to m2ts. M2TS or AVCHD has native support in Windows 7 and you don't need to install any crappy codec pack. You will need to use the Xbox MCE because the dashboard doesn't support M2TS. Fixes OP's problem quite nicly though , That or the newer MP4 codec will do its preferable to on the fly transcoding which will just needlessly slow down the PC.
