Belazor
The latest issue of Game Informer contains a surprising statistic for anyone who's ever loved and lost their Microsoft-branded home console ? according to their survey, in which over 5,000 console owners participated, the Xbox 360's current failure rate due to the Red Ring of Death, E74 or other hardware failure is 54.2 percent. They also calculated the relative death toll for PS3s due to the Yellow Light of Death (10.3 percent) and Wiis, due to ... well, we're not actually sure what color the Wii's light turns to upon its demise (6.8 percent). Unfortunately, for having the highest failure rate, survey participants also pinned Microsoft for having the least helpful customer service representatives. Not that it matters ? later in the survey, only 3.8 percent of participants said they'd never buy another Xbox 360 due to its high failure rate. Speaking of which, we're not sure what future techno-utopia this poll was conducted in, but a 54.2 percent Xbox 360 failure rate souawfully low. Had the survey's participants been comprised entirely of Joystiq staffers, it would have been a bone-chill100 percent. Source: http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/17/game-inf...t-failure-rate/ --- Ouch, I have a lot of friends with failed Xboxes (only two with failed PS3s), but I never knew it was THIS :od :o
Sethos
Oh I love limited surveys, especially on 'failures' because those who've had a bad experience tend to actually take them, just to vent some 'anger - That's what I do :p
Ji@nBing
You ******, I was just about to post this :p. That's pretty bad. The fact that only 3.8% of people find it to be a problem though shows you how much people love the platform.
Ci7
that is just stupid 5000 users survey out of like 30mil users it is only like 0.00016 of total population

The fact that only 3.8% of people find it to be a problem though shows you how much people love the platform. Yea, or they've just invested too heavily in it. Tbh I don't know what I'd do if I hit a string of bad luck with my PS3, I mean I've invested quite a bit of time and money in the platform so just dropping it like yesterday's news isn't really an option for me. that is just stupid 5000 users survey out of like 30mil users it is only like 0.00016 of total population So by this logic no poll or test is valid because they didn't test everybody to which it applies? You clearly have no idea how studies work. I'm not saying this is a completely fair study - after all if 5000 people volunteered rather than 5000 Xbox owners being requested without knowledge of the actual test, then it can't possibly be fair - but saying that "this is invalid because they didn't test everybody" is just plain wrong. Mathachew Veteran Posted August 17, 2009 Veteran Share Posted August 17, 2009 I count my blessings. My 360 is 3 1/2 years old and hasn't had any major problems. I got a RRoD once because of a power fluctuation during a storm, and another time for an unknown reason while starting it up for the first time. Beyond those two instances and a game or two having locked up (no RRoD), it's been great :D
Ironman273
Noooooooo let's not talk about this!!! This is a rehash of the RROD argument!!! You're all a bunch of haters!!!! lunamonkey
Should have gotten an elite, thats all I can say. Yes, we should have all waited a year or more to get a product that we had no idea would ever be released.

Waylander
that is just stupid 5000 users survey out of like 30mil users it is only like 0.00016 of total population 30.2 mil is just units sold loads of xenon or zephyr's will have died or will die at some point, some articles state there failure rate as high as 68%. i had 2 which failed and even xclamping one of them only worked for a few months, i now have a jasper so hopefully it wont die so easy
dead.cell
The news is fine, it's the trouble it's already causing between two certain members. Which isn't your problem. Let the moderators take care of it. Worrying about people who have their ###### caught in their console should be the least of your worries. Anyhow, as for the news piece, I don't know anyone who's owned a 360 that hasn't had it RRoD on them. Well, except my little brother, but he got his only a few months ago. Ayepecks
Kind of interesting the survey didn't give specific timelines or anything, as we all know that it has been a big problem, but not if it still is a big problem.

Belazor
That's perfectly valid, just seemed like you meant 100% would need to be tested :p
Kushan
The problem is, this survey isn't a "proper" survey, it's an internet poll. When you do an official survey, you have to take a lot of measures to make sure it isn't tainted. You want to poll the widest variety of subjects that the poll applies to, you want to ensure nobody's voting multiple times and you want to make sure that the answers are genuine. This was just an online poll, taken only from people who visited the site with no way to ensure they even own a 360. It's not really valid, particularly as many PS3 fanboys will just tick the "I had a 360 and it failed" box out of spite. 50% is definitely way too high, even the 30% failure rate is hard to imagine. Furthermore, it doesn't divulge what models of 360 people had. We know the original Xenon chipsets were terrible, but the falcons were definitely better (but not perfect) and jasper RROD reports, although they do exist, are pretty rare. If Jaspers really have "fixed" the problem, then is it still as big an issue today as it was 3 years ago?
