Boz
that is just stupid 5000 users survey out of like 30mil users it is only like 0.00016 of total population Not really.. 5000 is actually a big study model. 50% is pretty bad. Now the thing though is that there are many factors that probably should've been taken in consideration like what model of the console it was tested. If they were testing people who had the xbox 360 for some time they probably had older versions that we all know had major problems. But in any case, this is really bad. I hate the fact they can't fix this once and for all. I just had my Elite Xbox 360 crash and burn. And it wasn't just the optical drive, but it's heating, locking up and so on. That's really not cool for something you pay $400.
DrunknMunky Veteran Posted August 17, 2009 Veteran Share Posted August 17, 2009 The problem is, this survey isn't a "proper" survey, it's an internet poll. When you do an official survey, you have to take a lot of measures to make sure it isn't tainted. You want to poll the widest variety of subjects that the poll applies to, you want to ensure nobody's voting multiple times and you want to make sure that the answers are genuine. This was just an online poll, taken only from people who visited the site with no way to ensure they even own a 360. It's not really valid, particularly as many PS3 fanboys will just tick the "I had a 360 and it failed" box out of spite. 50% is definitely way too high, even the 30% failure rate is hard to imagine. Furthermore, it doesn't divulge what models of 360 people had. We know the original Xenon chipsets were terrible, but the falcons were definitely better (but not perfect) and jasper RROD reports, although they do exist, are pretty rare. If Jaspers really have "fixed" the problem, then is it still as big an issue today as it was 3 years ago? QFT, can we just wipe the topic of all the other replies and keep Kushan's? :p
Ci7
That's perfectly valid, just seemed like you meant 100% would need to be tested :p correcto ! P.S. : i dont own Xbox

FlibbyFlobby
Out of curiousity, how have people come to the conclusion this is just an internet poll on their website? I saw no mention of that in the article on Joqstiq, The Consumerist or IGN either. They all state "a survey of 5000 readers" was used, which to me sounds more like a mail survey was conducted on subscribers. Try dismissing this kind of stuff as "just an internet poll" in the Sony section, that **** just wouldn't roll.

FlibbyFlobby
Can we just have peace for once in the gamers hangout please! We're trying to change things around here I want that as much as anyone else. After all, I come here to find out about game news. I was just poining out the contrast of how negative stories descend into pages of madness and arguing in the Sony section yet here it's just dismissed as fanboy fluff. It was a joke, chill. :) My question was actually a genuine question btw. I don't believe the failure rates for any of the consoles in the survey are that high, but I don't think it's fair to dismiss this as a biased internet poll without evidence to support it. dangerouseddy
ive had a number 360's since they came out, had 3 that had to be repaired due to rrod and my last one the dvd drive died on it (should get a replacement back tomorrow). still it only took a week to get my last one repaired which is pretty good imho. Subject Delta
Regardless of the accuracy, it has to be argued that the initial build quality of the 260, before the Jasper versions was unacceptably poor, and an unacceptable amount have been failing. Bhav
Had the survey's participants been comprised entirely of Joystiq staffers, it would have been a bone-chilling 100 percent. I think IGN has the same failure rate. Pretty disgraceful really...it's not even wear 'n' tear, it's just crappy manufacturing design.

MightyJordan
54%? Blimey, it's gone way up from the last survey I saw, which was 33%. Trust me to have my 360 in Germany awaiting repair for the fifth time right now. :p
Rookas
I've been through four of them, but I bought a Jasper when they first came out and it's still going strong. In related news, Infamous killed my PS3.

If it did I'd box that bad boy up and lock it in the cupboard for the time being, might be evil. ;)

Fid
Flipping heck... 54.2% is bloody high... it must be costing MS a fortune! Think about it... statistically (if I get this), for every two consoles sold, MS gives another one free! (Of course, they would repair and refurbish quite a few of them but still). I have been extremely lucky with mine, I had a launch console that never failed, then another I bought a couple of years ago and then one I bought the September before GTA IV came out, I've never had any problems with them at all. That said, both my friends have had to send theirs in for replacement, so the problem is there, but wow, so high! Fire those hardware designers! Black Hawk
THen you must have gotten one of those older elites or you are doing something to cause the RRoD. I got the first elite when they came out and the second one was sent by MS to replace the first one. I've done nothing unusual with them except playing. Emn1ty
Yea, or they've just invested too heavily in it. Tbh I don't know what I'd do if I hit a string of bad luck with my PS3, I mean I've invested quite a bit of time and money in the platform so just dropping it like yesterday's news isn't really an option for me. Investing in a 360 today is nothing like investing in a PS3. A 360 costs $200, and if your old one breaks, you just trade it in towards a new one and/or grab the MS warranty and be happy. Not to mention you can even get it repaired in some local game shops for around $50. With a PS3, you have just spent $400-$600 (depending on date of purchase), and when that breaks you usually only have one option: buy a new one. Sure, you can trade them in towards others, but what if yours is backwards compatible? None of those are lying around anymore. That is probably the reason the 360 has such a small percentage of people who REALLY care about the RROD, because it is a quick fix. Should have gotten an elite, thats all I can say. Elites fail too. Regardless of the accuracy, it has to be argued that the initial build quality of the 260, before the Jasper versions was unacceptably poor, and an unacceptable amount have been failing. Many consoles have had similar build reputations. The 360 was a bit higher than some, but if I recall the PS2 was regarded as the weakest system on the market in terms of durability at the time, and Sony didn't have an ounce of customer support as apposed to how MS is handling the RROD. madd-hatter
Should have gotten an elite, thats all I can say. 1st gen elite's are amung the worst in my experience. I know 5 buyers (including myself) and no survivors (including myself.) However, the 'buy again despite failure' stat does speak numbers towards the overall feelings of the console. Briandl79
I have to disagree with the customer service part (maybe someone else already has). When I called them up for my Pro replacement they sent a box right out and had a replacement unit to me in less than a week.
