Elite 360 No Longer Ships With HDMI/Component cables

Recommended Posts

This is exactly why I refuse to buy an xbox. Micro$oft always looking to choke every dollar they can out of you. You have to buy all these damn accessories just to get a use out of one, and their hard drives are damn expensive. I can put any ol' 5400RPM laptop drive im my PS3 and it works great. I think I've got a 320GB in there now. Now don't get me wrong, I am no fanboy, I actually tend to avoid all other Sony products. I just think Micro$oft's business model is junk.

Sony doesn't package an HDMI OR Component cables. What's the big deal?

Also, monoprice.com

PS3 at least has both optical and HDMI connections on the console. No need of a dongle to get optical...

They are also dropping the Pro models and the Elites will be filling in the spot. Luckly I bought my 2nd xbox which was an elite this last feburary and it came with all the cables. I know with my surround sound I have all my systems just plugged in to the TV itself and just having the audio cable from the tv running to the reciever all my systems then work great.

I was supprised when I bought an arcade, and that didn't have HD composite cables. Thankfully the arcade was to replace an old pro, so I didn't have to buy a new set of cables or hdmi cable.

Just seems stupid to me that if your selling a HD console, your not allowing it to be used to its full potential, until people realise(which some won't) that you need HD ready cables.

It's just like printer manufacturers who don't include a usb cable!

Component, not composite :p.

But yeah, a lot of people will probably end up buying it, and not realise that you need a HD cable to actually have it in high def. Especially now where most of the hard core have a 360, so its starting to be sold to the more casual / PS2 market now, who aren't as tech literate.

PS3 has had no issues with that, again don't make people too dumb just to suit an argument, most people will ask questions about their purchase and bottom line is if someone has an HDTV and runs in composite it will look like utter **** so they'll either

a) Phone the store they bought from thinking something is wrong and get an answer

b) Phone Xbox tech support thinking something is wrong and get an answer

c) Read the manual/box and realise it doesn't come with high def cables

If someone DOESN'T realise composite looks bad on their HDTV they only have themselves to blame, or well, their eyes. The current 360's have a switch to switch between standard def and high def right? I didn't really hear of many people accidentally continuing to run in standard def over high def.

I believe many people did that. The funny part is that there is a bigass sticker on those cables pointing it out.

Well I have no sympathy for those people, it's an easy mistake to make but to go on gaming/watching media for days/weeks/months in standard definition and not realise you aren't in HD?

Even my parents can tell the difference between SD/HD in a matter of seconds, one of them would clearly think something was at least up with the 360 outputting in standard def on a 40" TV. It looks like absolute crap.

Don't blame MS for people who've invested in an HDTV then can't even tell when something is running in crappy standard definition. MS' manuals and box will clearly state standard definition cables. I'm not approving of this move, but I'm not letting people play the "oh billions of idiots exist and this will be terrible PR for MS" card again. I'll bet 95% of people who buy an Xbox won't run it in standard def for a prolonged amount of time and not know it's not in HD.

Selling a top of the line HD console without any HD AV cables is just wrong. Microsoft be damned.

It's.. not that big of a deal.

53% of households own a HD TV.

Microsoft is just going for the other percentage that don't.. and they know that the 53% who don't will more than likely pick up the HD AV cables as an extra precaution anyway. Hell, I didn't own an HD Monitor OR TV at the time I bought my 360 and I bought the HD AV cables!

No component cable either? Sheesh.. someone is really tightening the purse strings at Microsoft! My Xbox 360 Pro came with the component cable set which ran fine on my HDTV - I only upgraded to HDMI because the cables were cheap and a heck of a lot more compact than the component ones!

Sony played it good to be honest this round compared to the PS2 which was heavilly accesorized, aka the 4 port controller adapter, the external network adapter, and the addon hard drive. Now it's all included plus wireless in the PS3. The remotes for movie playback still irk me, especially that the PS3 didn't have RF (and I have a Logitech Harmony, the PS3 remote was cheaper than buying those $50+ BT to IR adapters).

Heck, at the time, it was better to buy the Elite and sell my Pro off to upgrade the hard drive, I wanted HDMI anyhow so it was a good deal, I had bought the elite just as they came out. Kind of funny because the first Elite I got RRoD on me like my launch 360 did the same day. -.- Luckilly the store had more Elite's for me to exchange with. I think I had bought it at midnight release, took it home, it RRoD's on me, took it back the next morning. :p

The lack of wireless I can see a put off for some people, I don't use my PS3 on wireless and I got one of the original Xbox adapters cheap in the day (I think $50 which was a good deal on one like 6 years go when I got it). MS should've put wireless in there and just gave it an external antenna. :)

Wrong. They have a component/composite combined cable just like they always did.

Nope, standard definition only

21ada8k.png

If they had component, it would say high definition.

It even says it in the first post

as several GameStop employees have told us new models of the hardware hitting stores across the US (new box pictured) no longer ship with a HDMI cable. In fact, they don't even ship with component cables either, just some SD composite cables

Has anyone actually cracked the box to confirm the cables (with pictures)? I would not consider ****head Gamestop employees as reliable sources.

Maybe MS refers to HDMI as HD and component/composite as SD.

Composite is SD, Component is HD. If the AV cable in the 360 could do HD, it would not say SD on the box, that would be a bit of a marketing blunder.

MS even refer to the component cable as HD themselves.

Seeing as they charge $40 for the official component cable above it's pretty obvious why they're pulling it out of the box. Cost cutting and to generate revenue from people who know no better (an HDMI cable will cost you $1-5).

Sucks for non savvy users who might be suckered into buying the expensive HD cables.

My thought exactly. Back when I purchased my PS3, I didn't know about monoprice.com, and I ended up purchasing an HDMI cable for $24. It was a stupid mistake, and one that I made because...

1. I didn't realize in advance that the system didn't come with HD cables (again, stupid since I should have researched)

2. I was in a rush to start playing

3. I didn't know any better.

From a financial standpoint, the exclusion of HDMI cables is not crippling by any stretch, and it's certainly not a "ripoff", but it's the principle that bothers me. If an entertainment device (whether it's a Blu-Ray player, a gaming console, or whatever else) is built for high-definition, then HD cables should be included.

Tight wads. Sony got racked over the coals for not including any type of HD cable so it's pretty stupid on MS's part to do the same after selling it with them for the past 3 years.

It's lame, just as lame as printer's not coming with a USB cable.

Yup, I agree. Unfortunately, this sort of stupidity occurs with other electronic devices too. For example...printers don't come with a USB cable to connect them to a computer(!)

Edit: Cheese beat me to it! lol

Well even although HDTVs are on the uprising, Sony/MS/Nintendo would argue a lot of people still own SDTVs therefore they are supplying the minimum necessary to hook up the box. The thing is though the people who own SDTVs probably aren't the customers racing out to buy these games consoles just yet - Not everyone can afford an HDTV, even some who can't are hooking these consoles up to monitors instead, and you still need a component/HDMI cable then.

It was hilarious when Sony sold a $600 console without an HD cable, but it's pretty bad for MS to wait 3 years then copy Sony. Either way we're not the ones who should care about this (we don't buy $200 monster cables), and everyone just do their best in real life to tell your friends/family monoprice exists. I've genuinely already been in situations with family buying blu ray players/sound systems and other devices that need HDMI and I'm saving them money :)

Fair point. Didn't Mark Rein say over 50% of Gears players are using SDTVs? That's pretty unbelievable.

I seriously doubt that quote can be taken in context of being as simple as GoW2 sold 5~6 million copies, 2.5~3 million on SDTV.

How would Rein even know that?

None of my friends are playing their PS3 or 360 on a SDTV (and we're talking a large number of 360s), some of them are using monitors, but it's all HD resolutions. Not saying I can in anyway apply that context to every single person on Neowin, but on the other hand I seriously doubt 50% of the people playing GoW2 were doing it on an SDTV.

At least I hope not, WHAT A WASTE. At least get your 360 hooked up to a PC monitor (Y) Standard definition, ughhhh :x And yeah I know not everyone can afford an HDTV or a monitor, not trying to be harsh here, I just can't believe 50% of the people who bought GoW2 were playing in Wii resolutions.

People in college play on SDTVs. I've never seen an HDTV in a dorm. Thats a huge chunk of their playerbase.

Also, looks like the price drop for the elite never happened. Does that mean the HDMI cable is still included?

While there is a huge difference between SD and HD, SD doesn't look that bad, especially if you have nothing to compare it to, even on an HDTV. I had to use SD cables on my HDTV for a few weeks and didn't have a problem. Most people don't care that much about the difference. That's why many still don't even have an HDTV. "Bad" is a subjective word. You probably have much higher standards than most of the market when it comes to this SD/HD thing.

I don't know why it's so hard to believe that the majority of people are playing in SD. HD is still relatively new and it's only catching on very slowly.
