Boz
Current EFi-X Devices available: - EFi-X USB 1.0 (depricated - still updated with firmware but older hardware) if you do find it it's about $180 - EFi-X USB 1.1 (faster and better hardware chip) - does the same things as EFi-X USB 1.0 but has better resistance and compatibility. Most likely will support upcoming bios versions and faster boot. ($240) - EFI-X USB 1.1 RELOADED - this is a custom hand made highly tested version of the chip with 25 year warranty. - EFi-X USB 2.0 (this is an upcoming version of the chip) - it should offer further compatibility with hardware, much improved internal technology, faster and holds more memory for caching bios. Currently supported hardware that's recommended: CPUs: Intel? Core?2 Extreme Processors Intel? Core?2 Quad Processors Intel? Core?2 Duo Processors Intel? Pentium? dual-core Processors: ssors: EIntel? I might upgrade to 2.0 when it comes out as I got the 1.0 before EFI-X even became famous for their flawless OSX ability. Everyone is encouraged to write here about their experiences and information (ie. if you managed to install EFI-x on non-approved hardware). I will try to find time to post a guide on setting up your BIOS, flashing and installation on specific hardware configurations.
forster
There was a lot of discussion about these things using 'scene' code and not giving any credit back, as well as the thoroughly MASSIVE price of what can be installed driver wise on a USB stick. Granted, it's meant to be more impressive than boot132, but really, Ive just installed 10.5.8 on my main PC and it's cost me nothing extra (already had retail leopard kthx) and it's very stable. I think (and this is just me) that if people research parts first, they can save themselves a lot of headaches and save themselves the expenditure of one of these. I dont want to poo-poo on your thread, as I havent used one, Ive only seen them on Youtube/Insanelymac etc, but there's guides on osx86project, and insanelymac that can get people step by step OS X installed and not have to bother with this. craybox
is this basically classed as a mod chip and where do you insert it ? ( polite answers please :) ) oh i see it fits on the usb connector on the mobo :) Edited August 19, 2009 by craybox
forster
is this basically classed as a mod chip and where do you insert it ? ( polite answers please :) ) It plugs into the onboard USB header on your mobo - not sure Id really class it as a mod chip: EFI-X? is the Boot Processing Unit (BPU) that provides a full EFI environment. EFI stands forExtensible Firmware Interface and is a new standard created by Intel. It is a internal 10-1 pin computer chip that contains a custom embedded CPU, memory drive, and a USB connector designed to be mounted internally on a motherboard. So basically it says that it's a miniature computer system, that you boot into, that allows you to install/boot OSX or any other operating system. It loads up the drivers that allow you to run OSX, usually these drivers can be installed onto your OS partition, a boot partition, a CD, a USB stick etc, but this device plugs directly to the mobo and can discreetly be hidden and just let you boot without having to worry about anything. In theory at least.
Rudy
Too pricey for something that can be done for free (chameleon)
Vice
I like the idea of this product but its supported motherboards are very tiny for the price of the product. Pretty much if you don't go Gigabyte your out of luck. But using the free alternatives you can get it working on any almost any motherboard. ThehAWKs
Most of the people over at hackint0sh.org & osx86project.org Do not Like the idea of EFIx being sold. Because the whole point of the hackintosh world is to be open and free. The custom embedded CPU is there to encrypt the firmware on the flash USB drive nothing special there are bootloaders that can do the same thing that efix can do. The list is limited to Gigabyte because just like apple support for hardware is very important less is better and Gigabyte bios are the best most of the time all acpi errors are fixed and having dual bios comes in handy. Remember it's a hobby nothing more nothing less.
Rudy
Remember it's a hobby nothing more nothing less. Lots of people run OSx86 on machines they use for work (I've seen lots of graphic designers building OSx86 computers for their work)
Boz
I have never had luck with Hackintosh PCs with modified bootloaders and similar and especially with updates from Apple. EFiX 1.0 I have on a computer I tested on works flawlessly with Apple update and I've never had issues with those. It simply works. This is why I like it. Plug it in, insert OSX, boot the PC and install like on a Mac.. 20 mins.
