TonyLock
My MacBook Air (1st gen) went up to 40?C (104?F) yesterday and the back plastic started massively deform and when it cooled, it started to crack. The bottom rubber grips almost melted off! I didn't think 40?C was high enough to do that. Anyway, I spoke to Apple and they are happy to replace it with a 2nd gen MacBook Air this weekend. Anyway, what I would like to know is, what is the best way to back up my hard drive? I have 2 partitions, a Mac and a Windows partition and I don't really want to lose any data from my Windows partition. I have an external drive and was wondering if someone could recommend the best method to back it up or somehow mirror that partition, without Windows going nuts about permission violations. I love my MacBook Air but right now, it's nothing more than an CrackBook Spare!

Brian M. Veteran Posted August 20, 2009 Veteran Share Posted August 20, 2009 Restore the partitions to partitions on the external drive using Disk Utility, and restore them back to the new drive.
King Antonius
Wow. The Air must run very cool. I have a 13inch unibody bought in may this year, and it idles at 50-60?C. When playing games or even watching videos, it goes up to 75?C

a1ien
No, really. Pics or it didn't happen. Also, your 40C does not make sense at all. If that's the CPU reading, then the heat that killed it didn't come form the CPU. Does it still boot? Or will you have to take the HD out to back it up? chisss
When did you buy the Air? and 40C would NOT no way in hell melt and deform the plastic...

I love my MacBook Air but right now, it's nothing more than an CrackBook Spare! That is exactly one of the reasons that I am against "too thin" computers. The more compressed the space, the hotter it's going to get. Apple is planning to release an even thinner version of the iMac sometime soon, which is fine, but I find the current design to be thin enough. The thing gets hot already as it is, so I can imagine what the new, thinner model will suffer. An iMac is nothing but a laptop with a huge monitor on it. The Macbook Air is beautiful, it is a great engineering marvel, but how does the damn thing breath? Everything is so compressed...not good.
