Real World "rubbish"

Recommended Posts

I think Andrew was specifically referring to the 'latest forum activity' box when he suggested that option, seeing as kimsland and a few others have stated they'd prefer to see only tech-related threads appear in that box.

I think if it could be implemented as an option, it would please a fair amount of people, but I'd hate if the 'latest forum activity' was set to only show tech-related threads and there was no option to show threads from all forums the box currently shows.

A suggestion came through the other day asking for an option to show all forums without any limits.. I know certain forums are blocked from the 'Latest Forum Activity'.

Also, I was refering to the actual forums.. I didn't think about the small collapse button :p But good suggestion Calum, It would be nice to have filters in the LFA!

Or have LFA ignore forums that you have collapsed? :)

Real World News is simply a pleasant diversion [for some], when you get tired of wallowing in Tech/Computer stuff.

No one is forced to read any particular section or topic.

To me, much of the 'technical' posts are completly boring, and I have no trouble ignoring those. ;)

I am not normally changing Operating Systems, fighting viruses, fixing hardware problems, worried about every little slight update to Software 2.0.1b, on a daily or weekly basis.

I personally do not need every new gadget and piece of techware that comes out each year.

I do like Technology and sometimes post those sorts of topics.

However, daily views of Tech stuff alone is like constantly eating potato chips -- it simply gets tiresome.

I would agree that some 'News' is rubbish, whether it is technical or not.

But please remember that there is a wide spectrum of people viewing Neowin.

Real World News often shows the unexpected outcomes of Technology, the misuse & abuse of those gadgets -- which can be a good thing.

Hum at least, tries to pick articles that inform, inspire, or contain a little lesson that may help you grow in a spiritual way.

Whether you realize it or not, what you think of the events that become News IS important.

To critics and fans alike, Peace to you all ...

I like the forum the way it is now. There is something for everyone. I can easily ignore things I don't care for. I love tech news, and I love to keep up with the latest and greatest, but I don't want all tech news all the time. That would be boring as well.

Some the the other news stories are sort of corny but even some of the worst of them leads to some interesting comments and discussions. I've actually had my eyes opened to other point of views, which is a good thing.

To be honest I wouldn't change a thing

But here I am trying to get a dedicated Virus and Malware removal forum going on (not software discussion by the way)

Which could easily help thousands of members into the future. And its computer technical related !

And I am basically told No. But this "Real World News" exists? And what are all these threads exactly? They're a Copy and Paste, from some "source", with no other original OP thread creator, input at all

Sounds like someone is a little angry that their suggestion wasn't implemented :p

A little from column A and a little from column B

By the way I have agreed now that there is a place here for HUM and alike

I am also happy that Neowin may decide to allow ignore on certain forums from the 'Latest Forum Activity' box

I'm also happy that a member(s) felt similar to me and created a Poll: Should Neowin have a malware/virus removal forum?

All in all this thread has been quite constructive :)

I think any forum is much better off without a section for discussing politics/morals/religion/philosophy, because even 13-year olds have their opinions on that and will defend them to the point of psychological exhaustion. Very few people can discuss these topics intelligently, and those that do, avoid generic forums like that. The last Islam thread lasted for 614 pages of dogmatic assertions on all sides of the debate: will that ever be read by anyone?

IMO the most valuable forums, those where experts will share opinions, are dedicated to a certain topic. Stackoverflow is dedicated to programming, and there are some famous guys giving advice on there, like Jon Skeet. Since I found it I spend less time on Neowin's programming board because it's simply much less dynamic.

What Neowin has is good hardware and software tech support, and meticulous coverage of everything Windows. I must say I got fed up with all the Windows 7 leaked build threads; but it shows the level of dedication to that topic.

It's getting incredibly frustrating to constantly see political (mainly American) related threads in the tracker, especially as certain posters go out of their way to find news articles that match their own viewpoint or put a deliberately inflaming topic which just ends up causing the same flame wars in every thread.

A separate area for political discussion news that is ignored (or the user is given a choice to) on the forum tracker would really help :/

I agree. I think if some people think that the news is a bit biased then i'm sure Hum will be more than happy to take suggestions :)

The "Latest Forum Activity" over the past year been getting worse and worse with garbage. It's how I usually check out the threads on Neowin. Nothing but Copy/Paste RSS feeds latley. Rappy may do this but he add's more to the topic instead of just a copy/paste job.

Perhaps the mods should add a poll to this?

Copy and paste news is "ok" as it does sometimes cause a decent conversation to emerge. However some times it's took to far and turns into a glorified RSS feed, now that's ok on sites like Digg/Reddit that have community moderation but not on standard forum's.

It seems as if some posters are doing it to just increase post counts, which is really sad. Why does a forum need to show a members post count at all?

I totally agree with you, DrCheese. Most of the forums I used to visit have had their post counters taken down, and it significantly reduced posting for the sake of posting.

If it wasn't for this "real world rubbish", as you call it, Neowin would not get but a fraction of the activity that it does. People care about the real world. It is real and they are affected by it. It is the technical discussion you so advocate that is the real rubbish.

Near no one takes it seriously and why should they? Overclocking some CPU, having the latest version of some computer program or holding some record in some video game loses all meaning at the mere whim of a real life feeling such as hunger, love, fear or countless others.

Very few people out there have as much free time or as little life experience as it would take to make technical discussion one's priority.

Its not about the qty. its about the quality of the post.

+1 for adding filters to the LFA...

near no one that you know personally, but nearly everyone here does...

Correct, Neowin is great because it has a variety of topics discussed and isn't locked to just tech talk. However it gets a little boring when certain members post 50000000000 copy and paste threads a day which hardly get responded to, yet bump decent threads off the forum activity thing. As I said above without community moderation like digg/reddit have the signal to noise ratio is really really bad.

i think that there is a natural process of simply not coming across these uninteresting threads when they are buried under more active threads... but the Latest Forum Activity doesnt seem to work like that, for people who see/look at the LFA its basically the main way they use the forums... and alot of times it just shows a thread being started, with no other activity going on

imho, filters on the LFA like people already said are nice, but i think it is more important to limit the entries for the LFA to threads with replies... that way we can see forum activity, not the activity of the thread starter

I agree with this. Some posters have been going crazy with posting and it pushes down other topics where real discussions are happening. Back Page News was/is getting out of hand in that regard.
