BroChaos Veteran Posted May 25, 2003 Veteran Share Posted May 25, 2003 ok, i know that if you are watching a non-widescreen version of a movie, that you are missing some of the picture because the ends are cut off. however, when you watch a widescreen movie, are you missing some of the picture because the top and bottom are cut off? Dazzla Veteran Posted May 25, 2003 Veteran Share Posted May 25, 2003 No, I'll try and find a picture to explain it better 'cause I suck. But basically the top and bottom of the 4:3 and the top and bottom of the 16:9 are the same, it just extends further left and right on 16:9. Gism0
nono, you don't lose any picture with widescreen
Dazzla Veteran Posted May 25, 2003 Veteran Share Posted May 25, 2003 Here ya go, you can see the top and the bottom of both formats are the same, Anakins fringe and Padmes neck, both the same place. The 16:9 then extends to the left and the right. Pan and Scan is NASTY!
BroChaos Veteran Posted May 25, 2003 Author Veteran Share Posted May 25, 2003 ok, so it must just be the two versions of a movie i have were encoded improperly. cuz the widescreen is wider, but it is also shorter. i didn't think that was right, so thanks for clearning that up :)
Joshie
Then you have screwups like the Powerpuff Girls movie DVD, where all sorts of stuff was cropped, be it top, bottom, left or right. I remember being sad when I bought it cuz it was like, the worst transfer I'd ever seen. :(

Dazzla Veteran Posted May 26, 2003 Veteran Share Posted May 26, 2003 Yup, I don't understand why they release 4:3 versions, they're nasty as hell. Even if you don't have a widescreen TV 16:9 is still better.

helmers
The GBA is widescreen. Thing is, when it's widescreen, it is easier for the eyes to "capture" all the image. Many of the LCD's shown nowadays are using 1280x1024; that's even less widescreen than 4:3, and is plain evil. Widescreen is the way of the future, for easier view and use. :D

thollian
I used hate WS, and only watch full screen, but lately, I am starting to like WS more, since I get the whole picture.....
kylejn
When I was a little kid I liked full screen, but as soon as I learned that widescreen meant that you saw the whole thing and that full screen cut off stuff, I switched. I still have one friend who insists on getting full screen whenever we rent stuff, and I just wanna smack him in the face.
