DrunkenBeard
Hi, - I'm interested in playing an RTS game with an RPG touch and thought Warcraft is a good one. It seems that there is a strong story and mythology, and that's an important thing to me. So what do you think ? Should I play it ? Is it a must ? In this case, should I start from the first one (1994, that's pretty old) ? I wouldn't like it to just be thrown in the middle of the story, ignoring 90% of the background culture. Any recommandations ? Other comparable, more accessible, newish games ? Thanks. PS : BTW, are Blizzard planning a Warcraft IV ?
BGM
my favourite RTS is C&C: Tiberian Sun Starcraft and Warcraft are both good games, and so long as you don't get sucked into WoW (it's worse than crack) they are good healthy fun! :D

I didn't play the second, so I can't comment on that one. Start with Warcraft 3 Reign of Chaos, finish it and then go for Warcraft 3 The Frozen Throne. It will not be a problem if you haven't played the previous games these two. And about Warcraft IV, a guy from Blizzard said that if their developers like, they will make Warcraft IV. I'm guessing they are already working on it, figuring out the story and such things. But I bet they will not announce anything until the are done with WoW. And that should be at least a year from now. Maybe even more, they still have Starcraft 2: Zerg campaign to announce at the next Blizzcon, and Starcraft 2: Protoss campaign at the one after. And possible Diablo 3 expansions. Not to mention another expansion for WoW. :)
cropcircles
Pack your bags and say goodbye to the family. You'll never come back. In all seriousness I am slightly intimidated by the WC community and haven't taken the plunge myself. One thing for sure the Warcraft thread here is huge. Amazing devotion and committment. Yusuf M. Veteran Posted August 26, 2009 Veteran Share Posted August 26, 2009 (edited) It's a great game but it's somewhat outdated so try and look past the graphics. I started playing it back in '04 without playing any of the previous Warcraft games. At first, it's a little odd but you learn to understand the perspectives and stories of the respective characters and factions. EDIT: I was referring to Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos and its expansion, The Frozen Throne. Edited August 26, 2009 by Anaron
drbobiii
Yes. Warcraft III (and expansion) are quite fun and have a good story to keep you interested. In fact, the retail game comes with a large booklet that is part manual and party background story. As for Warcraft I & II, I briefly played them but don't remember much of a story. Besides, orcs, elves, and undead hordes are used so often in our culture you will hardly be lost. The multiplayer is quite fun too, in particular a custom map (Dota) has become very popular. MR_Candyman
Honestly, the original Warcraft game wasn't very good. Warcraft 2 and 3 are great though
crazzy88ss
I still play WC3 today; it's a great game. You can start at WC3: ROC (the original) and do just fine with the story. Blizzard does a good job. If you want to go back further, I'd go to WC2. Warcraft 1 is pretty damn old.
Tharp Daddy
Warcraft III still stands as one of my top, if not the top, RTS game i have played. The online community is still huge (the top selling PC games for July? Warcraft III battle chest was on there) especially with games like DOTA which has a huge online community. The single player was also fun.
+jamesyfx Subscriber² Posted August 26, 2009 Subscriber² Share Posted August 26, 2009 Warcraft 3 is an amazing RTS game, I'd like to think they've aged better than Command & Conquer titles.
