Xbox 360's Facebook And Twitter Will Require Xbox Live Gold

Microsoft said at E3 that Xbox Live users would need to be Gold members (requiring an annual fee) to access Last.fm without paying for a Last.fm-specific subscription; Silver users would just have extremely limited access. What Microsoft didn't mention, however, was that these limitations would extend to both Facebook and Twitter, as well.

This news was buried in Microsoft's late night press release about the new Xbox 360 price adjustments. Here's what the press release says:

"Xbox LIVE Gold Membership will be required for Twitter and Facebook when they are available, and is required for Netflix. Games, media content and Netflix membership are sold separately; a hard drive is required for storage."

When Facebook and Twitter's Xbox Live extensions launch later this year, you'll need to be a paying subscriber to access the applications. The press release doesn't get anymore specific than saying the social networking add-ons will arrive sometime "this fall," as Microsoft has said in the past.

What do you think about limiting Facebook and Twitter to Gold members?

These are free everywhere else you use them, but to be honest I won't touch them on a console, I use my iPhone if not the PC.

Doesn't bother me, I have XBL Gold every year.

Makes about as much sense as charging for an application for which the service is free imo (Twitterific, Tweetie etc).

I would never use either on the console. I only use one on the PC. Just seems like bullet point features that are style over substance. At least MS is half trying to give Gold some more value.

I may use the Facebook app if it doesn't automatically publish crap about my XBL activity on my wall. Won't be using it extensively though.

There is always a way to turn these things off in facebook itself. However I too hope it doesn't do this :p it's stupid

I pay for a Gold anyway, don't see the point in having it connected and not having Gold :/

I know a lot of people have Gold anyway, but requiring a paid subscription to use a free service seems a little naughty... That would be like a phone OEM saying, you've got a facebook app on your phone, but you need to pay us to let you use it.

This makes me sad.

tbf, it looks a lot more interactive than the iPhone app.

If MS can sell P2P online gaming they can get away with anything. ;)

I don't really understand why my friends/the world needs to know every ****ing thing I'm doing.

What's next, Facebook fridge edition?

Big deal that both require Live Gold. Someone has to pay for the cross licensing.

Lol, what cross licensing? Twitter and Facebook APIs are completely free.

Anyway, this is ridiculous. It's not adding any real value to xbox live gold, it's artificially making it more important by adding in features which could very easily be done for free. This is even worse then paying for an iPhone twitter app, that's a one off fee which is usually only $5, MS is asking for $5 a month to use this service.

Complete bull****, IMO.

You don't just get Facebook with it though do you? You get all the Gold features. If you pay for a gold account JUST to use Facebook on a 360 then you obviously have a few problems.

Well no, but the fact you have to pay a monthly subscription, period, is bad enough. It's kind of like only being able to use the iPhone twitter app if you're on a specific O2 tariff.

Yeah I suppose :p I still don't see the point in having a 360 connected to the net and not having gold :/ I see where you are coming from though :)

Why should you have to pay for a Gold subscription to access a free website?

You shouldn't. I don't understand why people would want facebook on their 'GAMES' console either but apparently they do.

Because Microsoft can do whatever they want on their console....

I really don't see the problem, if you want it free use a web browser. if you want to use it on your 360 you have to pay.

Because you do. It's Microsoft's console, Microsoft's rules. If you don't want to pay for it, don't. It's quite simple tbh.

I don't understand how people can complain about them requiring a Gold Membership.. Gold = Online, Silver = allows you to play xbox and track your progress. Plain and simple

Last time I checked Silver users could still buy and play XBLA titles/Movies and some other things which require online functionality. Being on Silver just really used to mean no multiplayer, although now MS are starting to make all the additional features require Gold as well. There's not much you can do game wise without online multiplayer, but there's still plenty of other good reasons to have your Xbox online when on Silver.

How about we turn the tables and say multiplayer is free but all these additions like demos a week 'early', facebook, last.fm, twitter, netflix are what make up the Gold subscription? :p I'd enjoy that seeing as I'll never use the social apps, and I can't currently access Netflix ;)

if you want to use it on your 360 you have to pay.

I love my 360, but this pretty much sums up the 360 philosophy in a single sentence. Making free things premium (see: facebook, twitter, online gaming), and premium things really premium (see: hard drives, wireless dongles).
