windows update installation history

Recommended Posts

I installed windows .net standard server build 3590, and when setup finished I visited the windowsupdate web site and I downloaded successfully 10.5 MB updates....

To my surprise next time when I rebooted and revisited the windowsupdate website -but this time from windows xp pro build 2600 (using the same pc but with another IP), and I chose the option of "view installation history", I found both the updates I downloaded for windows xp and windows .net listed...

Moreover, I found the history of some updates I downloaded for xp pro before formatting my partition...

What does this mean??? :devious:

it seems they don't depend on cookies to store such history, nor on any IP checking staff, they seem to be saving something like our processor id ..

.............any thoughts???

:ermm: :ponder: :paranoid: :)

Your problem sounds unique; but it's probably a result of having both operating systems on the same computer. As for the format thing, maybe you're mistaken. I can't imagine microsoft retaining usage history of windows update; it seems like a huge waste of time, and, more importantly, a major breach of privacy.

As far as I know, processor ID can be disabled (I have an option to in the bios of my Pentium III 550).

People (and pathetically, so called "hackers") think that once you get a new IP, you're scott free, and nothing can identify you again. The truth is, a hardware address (MAC address) to uniquely identify a piece of networking hardware. This does not mean, however, that there's no way around this. Some routers (like the linksys cable/dsl router) let you change the WAN MAC address. Linux also allows you to specify a hardware address. If they were tracking someone, they could use that.
