Kalint
Can never catch a break with these guys! Blizzard's decision not to support LAN multiplayer in StarCraft 2 has caused a significant outcry from the game's fans. As a compromise, the company is considering allowing players to play through LAN after authenticating online through Battle.net. "That's certainly something we're discussing," lead designer Dustin Browder said. "Maintaining a connection with Battle.net," Battle.net lead Greg Canessa explained. "I don't know if it's once or periodically, but then also having a peer-to-peer connection between players to facilitate a very low-ping, high-bandwidth connection... those are the things that we're working on." "We really wanted to have a very integrated experience for our players," Blizzard lead designer Browder said in a separate interview. "A lot of games these days require an internet connection to play." "We really wanted to bring all these players together and keep them in the same pool, and make everything work, so your achievements work, your friends list works, everything just works correctly, as opposed to having two separated ways to play." Blizzard confirmed that players will be able to play StarCraft 2's single player campaign offline, but they'll have to us a "guest account". Argote
Still doesn't fix the problem of playing on a LAN where the ports to Battle.net are restricted.
Cold Blood
Why don't they realize that even if they disable LAN, people will still find a way to pirate it and play on lan. So their efforts are in vain and will only give the game a lower mark imo.

The current way Starcraft 2 works, is that there is no Lan mode.. So there is no way to pirate it and play on LAN, as there's no code, there's nothing to crack. Starcraft 2 will be cracked certainly, but being cracked and LAN enabled? thats highly unlikely to happen fast if at all.

I'm not so sure, before GTA IV, GTA 3 1,2, and 3 on pc has had multiplayer mods. http://www.thegtaplace.com/downloads/c28-multiplayer-gta

Naturally they're just protecting their work but this is a bit too far. Is the new battle.net supposed to be like steam now?
Crompee
After listening to their justification at Blizzcon and what they are trying to achieve I fully understand and respect the decision. There's multiple reasons for no LAN but the 3 are: 1. They want Battle.NET 2.0 to be the place everyone plays Starcraft 2 on. 2. It gives them alot more control in Starcraft2 E-Sports, Blizzard really doesnt like KESpa getting all the profits and all control with Starcraft in Korea. 3. They dont like whats happend to Starcraft, where anyone can download it illegal and play online through LAN programs such as hamachi. Which is apparently a huge problem in countrys like China. CelticWhisper
All the DRM they code in will eventually be cracked. I give it a month, and that's being generous. The other thing is that there doesn't need to be a LAN mode in order for people to hack together a LAN play solution - all they need to do is simulate a Battle.net server on the local network and with a little DNS or hostfile magic, SC2 will be none the wiser. I'd think Blizzard smart enough to realize this, but I guess not. Shame, too, since Stardock is smart enough and makes a pretty penny on completely DRM-free games. HeartsOfWar
They didn't remove LAN because of piracy. They removed it because they wanted to track statistics every time you play which enhances the online community, and make their games even more e-sport friendly. Personally, I wish Blizzard would stick to their guns and just stay "tuff!", because although they were fun and I have lots of fond memories, they're old school. No one wanted to travel with their gaming box in the first place, but people tolerated it / took the time to setup tons of machines because online play wasn't where it is now. LAN parties / play is simply a dying breed...
phend-one
C'mon, doesn't Blizzard have better things to do like focus on developing a game so it'll not be pushed back to a later release date? Does it not have faith that its product will be so awesome that people will buy it regardless? People are going to do what they do. Can't change that. Whether you make it easy or difficult for them, it's just a minor obstacle. Blizzard has forgotten that LAN play was a reason why the original was so popular. Blizzard: quit trying to fight technology! Adapt!

Cold Blood
They should add LAN and an extra option, ranked game or unranked game or something like that when playing LAN. Ranked means that it will affect their position or whatever in Battlenet and thus you need to connect to the internet, and unranked that doesn't do that :p. Prosidius
The new battle.net features are very nice. They do want a streamlined experience for all there games. For example when SC2 launches, you'll be able to add people to your friends list in WoW and see if there online playing SC2 or not, and talk to them, via 2 seperate games. It has a very social aspect to it.

Being able to communicate with your friends on Diablo III, World of Warcraft, and StarCraft II. Anyway, support for a pseudo-LAN feature is welcomed. After all, the benefits of playing a LAN game is low ping between players that are close to each other in real life. I'm sure Blizzard will find a worthwhile solution to the current lack of LAN support in StarCraft II. Check this out for a peak at the new Battle.net service for StarCraft II.
