yep im pretty sure thats all you have to do, i've installed v4 and it totally screwed me over so i uninstalled it and searched for any registry strings relating to tgtsoft and stylexp and deleted those as well then just replaced the DLL and rebooted and it worked like a charm, i've never been a huge fan of their program since ppl have made it clear that the only thing changed is a dll so i figure why do i need their program/registry strings lerking in my pc when the hacked dll is really all you need?

they're trying to make it seem like the themes wont work without the program when in actuality the program wont with w/o the DLL and i've never really understood what stylexp did other than sit in the program files folder and have its own uninstall path in my add/removes box. if anybody can shed some light as to what this program actually does considering the DLL does everything that has to do with skinning non microsoft themes.

LMAO... everyone is OBVIOUSLY going to stick with Style XP cos their skins are SO much better than WindowBlinds... as if. The only feature keeping them ahead was the fact that it was free... people wouldn't pay originally because it was just a hacked Windows file.

Anyway, few people have Windows XP, and those that do MOST have it illegaly. So all the people that ripped M$ off for ?300 are going to go and BUY this crap software for $20... NOPE! The whole program / website REAKS of amateurs.

When Style XP is released, you will receive only one-year of free updates.
LMFAO!!! Kill off the FEW people that WOULD actually pay. Looks like WindowBlinds 3 is going to make a come back. TGTsoft seem SO stupid targeting basically a warez community [yeah I know new computers ship with XP, but it's only experienced users that buy stuff like this and experienced users RARELY buy computer packages straight out of the shops].

HAHAHAHA... this is just so funny. I've aleady seen cracks for TGTsoft programs.

Hardware ID: (This is for generating your registration key. Look in Help... About StyleBuilder...)

Ouch... THAT's going to stop it being used illegaly [chukles after remembering M$'s 'brilliant' new activation scheme and how well it worked].

MUAHAHAHAHA.

Oh, I'm bored of laughing now.

MUAHAHAHAHA.

Maybe just a bit more...

MUAHAHAHAHA.

And they want people to pay $20 for designing skins and customers $20 to USE skins? LMAO.

MUAHAHAHAHA.

Oh well, maybe just a bit more laughing.

MUAHAHAHAHA.

lol

people have already created great skins before the beta of stylebuilder even came out

sure it might have been a little harder using reshacker or whatever they do use but it works and if people want them bad enough they will either crack the lame attempts by tgtsoft to make people pay for something that comes with windowsXP free just not a broad variety or stick to reshacker and the free version of windowblinds or some other skinning software.

There was a thread awhile back (during the reshack days) pointing to a website by someone that was working on a program that would do basically what style builder does, but for free. Does anyone have time to do a search of the old posts to find this? (If not I will when I get home tonight)

Sorry that I can't remember any more about this.

they figured by beta 3 people would be catching on to how their software does nothing at all to help the skinning process its ONE file that does it all so in Beta 4 they come with some new strategy talking about, oh yeah we no longer need to hack the dll this gives so many advantages over the old way you can have our program virtually non existent in RAM and whatever else they tried to pull they just knew people would realize that nobody needs stylexp. they already supply us with the one thing we need already so by upgrading everybody to beta 4 they can introduce this pay to play program and make people think its best since their new way of doing things is so much simpler and faster and easier than using the dll they hacked to begin with.

its ludicrous how they think people will just go nicely into paying 20 bucks to skin THEIR OS that we 'paid' 300 dollars for already all because they try and manipulate the average user into saying oh this way is much faster and safer than the old way!

What the hell are you all talking about complaining that they intended to make a product of StylesXP?

The only bulls_hit is people acting put out because of this. I have also beta tested their approach since Beta one and it was always apparent they were planning on making StylesXP a product, as well as Stylebuilder. Why the hell else would they develop it? You think Dr. Style doesn't need to make a living too? Please... How else can they afford to have had such a fast development cycle with product support? Innovative products deserve money.

"Oh, they tricked me and now want money for such a cool idea"

If you don't want to use StylesXP, the way to hack your own uxtheme.dll without ever installing StylesXP has been around for a while. Stop complaining because StylesXP offered to do it for people and make some money on the side. Note, as you likely know the new StylesXP does not touch Uxtheme.

Hack the uxtheme.dll yourself you freaking pansies.

damn whiners

Ishmael,

This goes back to the reasons that TGTsoft originally tried pushing Styles instead of WB.

"It was using the dll that came with Windows...so why pay for it?"

We aren't whiners...just dissappointed that they are going back on the original idea. They have lost their main reason for using their software.

not that most of you in here care, but i just wanted to point out that beta testers who register it now will get 2 years of free updates as opposed to the 1 year you'd get if you register it when it goes retail

exactly,

why pay 20 dollars for something that literally does nothing?

when if microsoft ever releases more themes you know they will be as close to perfect as possible, no bugs to work out and release version 1.3 of luna and all this other **** because they're the ones that made themes a part of windows XP os w/o a use of third party programs to begin with

with stylexp you're getting whatever tgtsoft releases and if you dont like it you just paid 20 bucks for nothing, or you could go search for things people made but it wont be in your interest. some people create themes to appeal to other people too but i know if i made a theme it would be to my liking and if other people liked it then thats cool too i wouldnt spend time like microsoft trying to develope a theme that the general populous would appreciate and like. Luna was a fine theme and im pretty sure a lot of people still use it and have used at least one of the 3 styles that came with XP upon its release so why pay for something the company of its own OS might release for free as a windows update pack?

So it will cost me 40 bucks to use and creat themes with StylesXP! I am so excited!

Or...maybe I will switch to WB3 and only pay 20 bucks.

or...maybe I will just go back to version 3 of the dll and we will have to have our own versions of the themes that will use the original dll and not the new.

Fast development cycle? This is just a group of / single programmer, not a 'proper' company. I think [and thought] that Style XP would be free and StyleBuilder they would charge for because it makes skin making easier. BUT OH NO, they have to charge for both... THAT is what people are moaning about.

Yes, people don't do it for free [actually there are plently of freeware programmers that AREN'T in it for the money], but it would have made more sense to make Style XP free, similar to the WindowBlinds free version [missing a few features but perfectly useable].

LOL... I only put on StyleXP 4.1 Plus on the other day to checkout Coughdrop, but it sucks! Rodium Edge [or whatever] was the best one, but even that was not better than Classic. And Toothpaste... what a joke! NO-ONE would use that, and it's mainly the Community skins that are used [and now the community is going to have to pay to design skins without constant nagging pop-ups].

Oh yeah... MUAHAHAHAHAHA.

well i uninstalled styles xp, diabled the theme service in services.msc, rebooted with command prompt and it still wouldn't let me overwrite the file in windowssystem32...

What now?

Yeah DrOMangie, good logic. If they want to make money for themselves, then they can go to hell.

What kind of job do you ever plan on getting once you move out from your mom's house? I hope it doesn't include making money for yourself.

I would not pay for a hacked dll, but I think they were smart in changing the entire approach with version 4 and giving an alternative dll for money. That, you can charge for.

Good thinking Mortensen about what in your mind makes a proper company. Winamp has been made by less than 6 people and they sure wouldn't constitute proper in your mind either. The skins you are complaining about too were also not made by tgtsoft, actually a couple you complained about were made by people in these forums. No you don't get nothing, you get the ability to use any msstyles file you want with stylesxp.

Again, don't like their approach? Hack the uxtheme yourself and shutup.

i forgot where but i know there was a command line utility to disable system file protection and disable it from being in use then relace whatever file you wanted to and reenable everything..

i think it was called In-Use or something , its probably on the microsoft website but if you cant replace the dll then you should try that.....it replaced for me fine w/o even needing to be in safe mode or the command prompt

I hope you don't laugh yourself to death cos anyone thats bought a new computer lately (ie for christmas) has XP not to mention the millions of people that preordered it or have bought it retail. Since you seem to enjoy talking out of your ass if you look on the MS customisation NG theres plenty of people there also that have BOUGHT their copies of XP that ARENT on this board that happen to like StylesXP over WB so shut up and quit blethering on like everyone who has a copy of XP downloaded it.

to disable system restore all you have to do is

1)go into the system properties through the control panel or by hitting the "windows" key and the pause key together

2) click on the system restore tab

3) check the box "Turn off system restore on all drives"

4) reboot to safemode and replace the uxtheme.dll

5)make sure that you re-enable system restore when done.
