Tesseract
What the majority of people posting on this topic (myself included) are outraged about is the fact that Styles XP started out as A SINGLE FILE that allowed for the use of different styles. Now the "file" has evolved into a program that must be paid for in order to be used, and it was not even expected or mentioned by TGTSoft. That is what angers me the most. EmuBite
Does reverting back to beta 3 actually get rid of the time expiration? Does anyone know for sure? Cheers, RW
sanctified Veteran Posted December 18, 2001 Veteran Share Posted December 18, 2001 the coughdrop theme works with the dlll from beta 3?
Ishmael
okay Cody, so StylesXP didn't tell you, waah. Hack the file yourself. Since so many people seem to be so helpless, here is the hacked uxtheme.dll. I will not make step by step directions so you can feel some sense of accomplishment. Sorry about no attachment, it must be too large: Here is a link to a rar I made with my own hacked dll. url deleted
Ishmael
here is the file, somehow it refused to attach the first time. {url deleted]
sorlag
hmm paying for style builder is ok, but why should we pay for stylexp ? its just a patch! hey TGTSoft are you stoned and seeing much $$ ? now i understand why they changed from file patching to memory patching. cya
DrOmango
they constantly put out diff versions of xp styles dll's.. and i hate that. I already have 2 style xp's on my add/remove list grrr
Malechai Veteran Posted December 18, 2001 Veteran Share Posted December 18, 2001 Cody and anyone else ****ed off about paying.. You want money for work you do right? You have a job? Do you get paid? Yeah? Thought so, so shut up. You're no different than these programmers. You have a job, you do work, you get paid. Whats so hard to understand? hostile
I knew this would happen. They are really selling Microsoft's code again. Sort of. I bet this is why they went with the memory patch instead of hacking the dll. They couldn't selll something with a file of MS's. This was all done pretty sneaky, IMO. I never cared for Frogboy peddling all Stardocks items, but at least he is straight forward about it. Glad I never upgraded past beta 2. To those that did and fought with me about how great it is, told ya so. :-p
h71y6
Well (boobless).. that won't do you any good. Beta 3 is still time limited (90 days). To those of you who have Beta 3 installed and would like to keep your dll, copy your dll somewhere else (not in winnt folder), rename it to the backup file of the original dll in your system32 folder and replace. When the uninstaller runs, it will replace your dll with the backup. This way you don't have to find out how to disable the SFP. This will only work with the Beta3. Other notes: I think it'll serve their purpose to charge for only one of the two programs. If they charge for styleXP, then don't charge for StyleBuilder. This will encourage theme development. If they charge for SyleBuilder and StyleXP is free, then more people will have the ability to change themes, thus encouraging people to develop. Either way, it'll be better than charging for both. I personally won't pay money for something that is half-assed. They need to develop the programs into something more robust than what they currenly have before they start charging such prices. Remember, people will pay IF it's worth it.
Dazzla Veteran Posted December 18, 2001 Veteran Share Posted December 18, 2001 I've just uninstalled styles XP (there were two in my uninstall list!) and after a reboot all of my themes worked fine, which shows that it hasn't put back my original uxtheme.dll. now I had beta 3 installed then i installed 4 over that (thats why there were two in my uninstall list), now they are both uninstalled (apparently) will i still get a expired message. I dont really understand how a hacked dll will prompt you to pay for something, or does it just cease to work?

kawai
Btw, I am quite suprise that Frogboy is not bitching about this right about now. FYI, he is the guy behind starcrap. TGT is bunch of idiots, are they ****ing stupid? they are only suppose to charge only one of the component, they have to give their client (styleXP) away for free and sell stylebuilder for a low price and at least give skin developers a reson to get it. Oh well, another company down to do the drain.
Elektro
i haven't checked yet for stylebuilder 3- but at PabUK - Link removed, you know the rules. wtmcgee
maybe it's my fault for not reading through the page enough, but they sure don't make it very clear that its a time limited thing. i personally have uninstalled it, and deleted all the themes i had downloaded. theming windows is cool and all, but not worth paying for to me - maybe when you can do FULL GUI changes, but right now the devolpers are limited to pretty basic changes. i don't fault the compnay for trying to make a buck - i mean, they are a COMPANY after all - i just don't like feeling like i was misled. y_notm
If tgtsoft is smart, they'll do what WB does and put a nag screen in a shareware version that asks you to buy the whole deal. I can deal with hitting "OK" twice when changing a theme. but I won't pay for a service that hardly ever runs on my computer (once a theme is loaded, stylexp stops running), plus I don't have a credit card to pay for style xp even if I would. oh well, even if they do charge, I'll find a way to get it. I have "connections. " :D

obsoleet
I downloaded and installed beta 4 of styles xp the day it came out and i have been using it without it bothering me, i think that it's the applet it puts in the taskbar that bugs you to register. crookram
so let me get this straight: - i still use beta3. after 90 days it will not work anymore? - will a theme made with stylebuilder 4 work with beta3?
