ok so it finaly happened, launch console died today and displays an e-74 error

so i check online, and im apparently still covered for e-74/RROD under extender warranties...

so i ring up support, and get told to go to the online repairs centre thing and start ti fill out the form, and up pops a billing page asking for my creditcard details, now i havent been told what im gonna be charged or anything so im a bit puzled....

am i going to be charged a stupd ammount or will they call me and ask before im charged as last thing i need is a repair bill that is gonna cost more than a new arcade edition (use old hdd etc).

anyone have any experience with this as i wanna get this thing fixed/replaced asap :p

It sounds like your 360 might be out of warranty. I'd call them up again and clarify things.

If it is out of warranty, you can fix it yourself pretty easily. There are tons of videos on youtube on how to do this. I'd start with the "penny fix" first as it's really super easy and only takes about 20 mins. If that doesn't work, go for the xclamp fix.

I've fixed my 360 with the penny fix, so if it turns out you're out of warranty and want to try yourself to fix it, feel free to ask and I'll help as I can.

I had a launch console do the same thing to me. I complained and argued with the customer service guys until they sent me a shipping label for a free repair. :)

My Xbox 360 launch system just died yesterday too. I swear they send some kind of code to error the system. :| I have taken excellent care of my launch system and never had a problem until yesterday when I turned it on to get the E74 message. It had even barely been used the passed few days too.

I'm still keeping it though, I may fix it myself but I will be buying an Xbox 360 Elite Fall 2009 edition from Amazon which I hear and have researched has the Jasper CPU. I'm not getting rid of my launch system to only get a refurb and have to pay $99 because I am "out of warranty" too since it's been almost 4 years now.

Here's the tutorial I used to fix mine. I'd be weary of that heatgun one posted earlier. Seems risky. Anyway, don't bother with the Arctic Silver as directed in this video. Just re-use the thermal tape you took off the chips. Peel off the non sticky side and use them to attach the pennies. My 360 has been going strong for 4 months after using this method.

The penny's are BS. The main cause is "board bend" due to the centre stand off's being higher the the outer ones. The heating/cooling of the system causes the board to flex over these high points.

The youtube hackjob is good if you're good with hardware, if you mess something else up you all you'll have is lot of scrap. My suggestion is that contact MS support and keep calling them and keep reporting them about this error message.

I agree with neo003. Keep trying to get a free repair from microsft. A replacement from MS, is always going to be better than fixing it yourself(which you can then do at a later date anyway).

It's a launch console, he ain't getting a free repair/replacement.

Saying that, you'd be surprised what you can get out of people if you are polite and persuasive. If you can get to speak to somebody on the phone, you could give that a go. Email will just get you canned responses.

Xclamp Kit off ebay, if your used to taking computers.etc apart then it's not particularly difficult to do.

Mine was displaying artefacts and freezing but wouldn't RROD, did the x-clam fix on it and it works again now :-)
