larry
Sorry to post stuff up all of a sudden but I like the answers I get on this website. OK, I have AT&T and when it was done for a few day's thanks to excite. I reformated my HD and installed Win2k. I got back online and was getting a lot of websites not working on this computer only. I was told to go to services and turn off DNS CLIENT? It works great after that. Is there something with WIN2K or is it an AT&T thing? Maybe SP3 will have a fix? My DNS client is set to automatic how do I turn it off for good or should I not do that? I'm on a home network with a router. Only to share internet access. Thanks... Also turning off DNS client did the same thing as IPCONFIG /Release and /Renew
Vlad
It's an AT&T/your router thing. NT boxes use the DNS client service to resolve hostnames to IP addresses. Normally it is something that shouldn't be messed with; I could give you more details, but I'm unfamiliar with the setup of your network. But to answer your question: If you wish to disable the DNS Client, you can right click the My Computer icon, then click Manage, then expand the Services and Applications tree, click Services, locate "DNS Client", double click it, then change the Startup Type drop-down menu from "Automatic" to "Disabled." This will prevent it from starting during startup. ipconfig/release and ipconfig/renew will request a new IP from a DHCP server, as well as (normally) a primary and secondary DNS server. If doing this resolved your problems, it sounds like either you simply needed to refresh your dhcp settings.
