DanielZ
First off, am I allowed to ask for help with torrent software, or is that against the rules? And secondly, my question is as follows: Lately I haven't been able to download any torrents. I've tried all sorts of different torrents. None work. By don't work, I mean, they don't even start. They permanently stay at 0 of 0 peers. I've tried different clients, restarting my Mac, restarting my modem and router, etc. My internet works fine, and I'm able to download files normally through my browser. All of the torrents have many seeds, but it's like I can't connect to the network at all. Can anybody help me?

I would imagine by asking about torrents you are referring to LEGIT software such as a Linux Torrent. :) With all the talk about The Pirate Bay, and others undergoing heavy fire from world authorities, it would be risky or at least a touch-n-go type of thing in regards to whether the seeds are working or not, let alone the legitimacy of the file you are trying to get. I have never had much luck with torrents in the past. Always get a slow download, even when properly set up, so I figure if worth getting, go with HTTP downloads or FTP downloads. Much much faster in my opinion.
Unrealistic
Sounds like a port forwarding issue.
agreenbhm
go with HTTP downloads or FTP downloads. Much much faster in my opinion. This is not true. There are many variables that will effect this. The HTTP/FTP server download bandwidth, your download bandwidth, and the health of the torrent. Theoretically you can almost max out your downstream bandwidth with torrents (or with HTTP/FTP), but it seems to be that it is more likely with torrents. EDIT: An opinion can't be right or wrong, but in this case, your "opinion" is more of your setup vs an opinion. Anyway, back to the OP. What tracker is the torrent looking at? Torrents using the Pirate Bay as their tracker didn't seem to be working after the site take down last week. As long as the Torrent has a valid tracker (such as openbittorrent), it should work. You should always see at least 1 for the peer (being you), so there is most likely a tracker problem. Also, try connecting your computer directly to the modem (temporarily, of course, as this is fairly unsafe), disable the software firewall, and see what happens. If it works, then you have a port issue, like stated earlier. If not, then I stand by my tracker issue diagnosis.
PNWDweller
I added my PC to the DMZ for the case of port forwarding. Never had had much luck with torrents in my case. Might be my ISP though throttling them. (Charter) I doubt that might be the case. As for HTTP downloads agreed can have an extended hop issue when sending to my PC especially if I am downloading from Japan or the UK from the west coast of the US. I understand that part for sure, but when it comes to BT at least on my end it is faster to do the HTTP download. Where I used to work, they had a 76mb connection on a fiber optic line. Even downloading at that speed, it was very limited to the server I was connected to and not my computer's settings. Of course it rocked when I would connect to a system that sent as fast as our connection. :)
DanielZ
Thanks so much for your helpful replies, especially on such an iffy topic. After trying all the various methods, I've deduced that it is indeed related to the Pirate Bay takedown. Even though I've tried different sites, most use TPB's tracker, which is why none of the alternate sites' torrents worked either. I tried downloading Sabayon Linux (first legal thing that came to mind), and it worked, because it's on a different tracker. So it isn't my computer (sigh of relief) after all. Thanks again for all the help!
MasterC
There's this website where you upload your .torrent file and it searches for more trackers and lets you add them in and redownload the .torrent. I did that, and found quite a few more trackers that let me finish my completely legal linux download. ;)
