Redestium
This is an unusual question but I wanted to ask the community here. I bought a game retail in box, is it possible for me to register it with Steam so that I would be able to download it later? It's a game that they offer to buy as a download. I'm thinking not, but again I wanted to ask. Thanks.

With my phsyical copy of Half Life 2, I never once used the disk, just entered the serial number from the packaging then downloaded it all through steam, so I think the answer is Yes if you include your serial number. cabron
if I am not mistaken, if you want to install the game from the dvd, it will be added automatically to steam. Now if you don't want to install the dvd, I guess you can download the game with your serial number.

I had cod4 and tired using that serial number to add ti to steam. It didn't work. I'm assuming therefore that you cannot. But it would be cool if you could! mad_onion
no, there's almost no game (outside of valve) that you can buy retail and then register on steam. there are a couple but I doubt it's what you're talking about.
Redestium
I was feeling nostalgic and wanted to install KOTOR (box sitting in front of me), I was hoping that I could just install it from Steam with the key.

Are there anything wrong with the DVD that stop you from installing?
Redestium
Are there anything wrong with the DVD that stop you from installing? It's actually on 4 CDs, so it's just a convenience factor, but I can't even find the serial number for it, or maybe it never came with one to begin with--it was so long ago that I installed this on my last computer. Weird.

Speedball 2 registers just fine (did that yesterday). And I think that Unreal Tournament 3 does too. :)

Drone_101
Some games you can, some games you can't, depends on the nature of the licencing agreement between valve and the individual games publisher. For a full list of supported games and the format needed to input the CD Key please see: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article...=7480-WUSF-3601 Hope that helps. SMELTN
I tried to install my retail copy of Call of Duty:World at War on steam but it would not let me. Told me I needed a steam key.
