DrunknMunky Veteran Posted September 9, 2009 Veteran Share Posted September 9, 2009 Well it's 9/9/9 today, the 10th anniversary of the DreamCast. I think we've had a topic on this each year so why break tradition :p ScrewAttack put together a top 10 list. Feel free to share yours :) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e0um4rxzEes.swf
Navan
The only game I played on it was San Francisco Rush 2049, loved that game!
Jimmy0
Me (and neither of my friends for that matter) owned a DreamCast, so the only time I got to play it was in stores. As such the only game I every touched was Crazy Taxi... but man it was addictive!
MightyJordan
It's such a real shame that the Dreamcast didn't make it. I had one (along with a PS1, but never had an N64), and I loved it. In fact, I brought it out of the wardrobe again recently while the 360 was away due to the dreaded RROD. I've also got a PS3, but my brother pretty much hates it, so he made me get the Dreamcast out so he could play Spawn in the Demon's Hand. :p One surprise game missing on the list for me is Metropolis Street Racer. It was the beginning of the Project Gotham Racing series and it was one of the best racing games of its time! Dynamic racing (i.e. if you're in the UK playing at 8am, play on a track in Tokyo, and it's dark), the Kudos system, some great controls and events, and a whole load of cool cars to top it off. :)
+Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted September 9, 2009 Subscriber² Share Posted September 9, 2009 Sega killed the Dreamcast, shame, it had lots of good games and was a solid console, but I think it's cult following totally suck it off too much (doesn't apply to anyone on Neowin before pants get thrown). LOC Veteran Posted September 9, 2009 Veteran Share Posted September 9, 2009 Quake 3 Arena Q3A was so good on Dreamcast in fact, that id ported some of the maps over to Quake Live. That's saying ALOT if you ask me.
DrunknMunky Veteran Posted September 9, 2009 Author Veteran Share Posted September 9, 2009 Yup. I can only think of one other FPS on DC and that was Unreal Tournament. It was definitely the Arcade/Fighters choice of console (Y)
Rigby
I've seen Quake III, Half Life and UT and have heard of at least one other. I never cared for FPS games on console anyway though.
DrunknMunky Veteran Posted September 9, 2009 Author Veteran Share Posted September 9, 2009 Half Life was never released though iirc, it was only ever shown at game conventions afaik.
Dead_Monkey
Q3A was so good on Dreamcast in fact, that id ported some of the maps over to Quake Live. That's saying ALOT if you ask me.I played many hours of DC Q3A over the network. Great game. I had UT as well, but it never quite got hold of me the same way.SEGA of Japan really screwed it up royally. SoA had a competing design that was rejected by the Japanese, they embraced the DC as released, they put together the best marketing plan possible, and really supported that console with great titles, then SoJ just pulled the plug on the entire thing just when they were really ready to go head to head with Sony. Putting a DC game at 640x480 on the VGA up against the PS2 is a totally unfair fight, DC wins hands down every time except against the games released right at the end of the PS2's lifetime. Rigby
Half Life was never released though iirc, it was only ever shown at game conventions afaik. I looked it up just now and you're right, but I played it at a friend's house last year so it apparently leaked. I've been meaning to get a Dreamcast for years, maybe today would be the perfect day. :)
DrunknMunky Veteran Posted September 9, 2009 Author Veteran Share Posted September 9, 2009 @Dead_Monkey, They had no choice but to pull the plug, developers were dropping support left, right and centre. Namely EA being the biggest dent in the line up. Which today continues when you see them threatening Sony to remove cross-game invites and custom music on the PS3. Their games don't support it, so no ones can and they have the leeway to get what they want. As soon as EA dropped support for DC, others followed. It wasn't even the DC's fault itself, it was because SEGA ****ed up with the Saturn and abandoned it to create the DC literally just a few months later, not even a year. Not to mention it hurt gamers even more who spent $500+ for the Saturn. But like you said SoA did a brilliant job and the marketing was great. It was far too late by that point though, the damage was done long before.
stezo2k
Funny thing is i cant remember EA releasing any games for the DC, maybe its me I loved the dreamcast, it was so underrated in the UK :( so many great games, i had so much fun online, even more than xbox live and thats fantastic. It was all about shenmue 1/2, virtua tennis, pso, crazy taxi, snk vs capcom 2 etc. they were amazing i cant believe virtua tennis wasnt on there, that game was so addictive. still is now but not so much with the later games
DrunknMunky Veteran Posted September 9, 2009 Author Veteran Share Posted September 9, 2009 Like I said, they dropped support for it :p They sat back and waited for the PS2 instead. Then all the sheep followed and decided to drop support too.
Dead_Monkey
Funny thing is i cant remember EA releasing any games for the DC, maybe its me EA was never on board. However, EA likes money, and they eventually would have gone multiplatform if the DC had held out. No one spent $500+ for the Saturn (at least in the US), it launched at $399. Capcom was in their heyday at that time, and if SEGA had put some money into translating and releasing Capcom's episodic RPG series (El Dorado Gate) in the US, I think that would have made a big difference. The DC could have been the RPG console with the right support, and most of SEGA's games that eventually hit the Xbox (sequel to JSR and the Otogi games which were not on DC) could have easily been DC titles (not as pretty, but they could have helped drive sales). The system was building new brands left and right, and sequels would have been the point where you're cashing in on those new franchises. Plus you had VC in house at SoA at the time, before it was sold off to Take2. EA was the only major publisher that wasn't supporting the DC. Ubisoft had yet to become the powerhouse they are today, but they were releasing games and bringing over translated titles. Take2 didn't exist yet in any appreciable form. I can't remember if Konami was supporting the DC or not, but at that time they weren't doing much of anything anyway. Treasure cranked out the hits on the Saturn and DC. Another two years and things changed radically in the industry, changes that would have positively impacted the fate of the DC if they had stuck with SoA's operating plan instead of pulling the plug. DrunknMunky Veteran Posted September 9, 2009 Author Veteran Share Posted September 9, 2009 I thought the Saturn was $525 at launch? The DreamCast was $240 or something and price dropped quickly to help sales.
Rigby
I thought the Saturn was $525 at launch? The DreamCast was $240 or something and price dropped quickly to help sales. Nope, it was $399. As for the Dreamcast it launched at $199 and they had no problem with sales; at launch they couldn't keep them on the shelves. It wasn't until the PS2 came along that sales slowed down. +Xinok Subscriber² Posted September 10, 2009 Subscriber² Share Posted September 10, 2009 I don't like how they reviewed Shenmue in that video. It was more than pretty graphics, it was overall a good game. I also think Sonic Adventure 1 was better than 2, besides for how buggy the game was. I hated how they gave the Hero / Dark teams the same exact abilities, and that walker robot they put Tails in. SA1 was also better for mini-games, with two decent snowboarding segments, twinkle park circuit, and sky chase. I also think the battles were better. For example,
t0mbi
The Dreamcast was the bomb! It was never big here in Australia, i only knew one other guy who had one. I remember the day Harvey Norman (electronic store) was having a Dreamcast sale and the consoles were AUD$99 BRAND NEW! And there was a line of...5 people :p.. Way too under appreciated,.. shame really
