Sir Topham Hatt
This is really annoying me. If I pay for games and such through Steam, I expect the service to be at least 90% reliable, yet I would suggest 50% of the time, whe I click on the Steam icon, it says it's connecting, but the program is doing nothing. The internet is clear, nothing is downloading, so I very much am annoyed. Is there anything anyone can suggest? Thanks
veritas310
I have been using Steam almost since it's inception and have never had that issue. What games, might not matter, do you have this issue with through Steam? What's your internet connection like (cable/dsl/etc.)? Hopefully we can help. Cheers. BlackSteyrAug
This happens to me quite often actually. It's not really a recurring issue, but when it happens, I usually just close the process steam.exe through ctrl+alt+del and re-open it and it seems to fix itself. If that does not work, wait for someone else's opinion, and if need be, a last resort would be to try reinstalling steam.
Malfunctional
Try exiting out of steam then deleting clientregistry.blob and appupdatestats.blob in the main Steam folder. Steam will recreated them automatically when you restart. Edited September 9, 2009 by Malfunctional
Sir Topham Hatt
I was trying to play team fortress 2. I tried launching the game and launching steam, both say they're connecting but the "cancel" button it greyed out. I did try restarting my pc but to no prevail. I am on ADSL though :/ No cable around my area. It just throws a wobbily like that sometimes.
Dance.
Once the cancel button grays out it's going to launch. Guess it must be to do something with checking file integrity or something. First time its slow but it becomes quite quick then :).
Sky Black
I've had a fair few problems connection wise but mainly since being with Tiscali...switching within the next month as contracts up. One solution I had brought to my attention was the use of a vpn client, worked for me except the country for steam will be wrong: all game prices in Euros I beleive. https://www.ultravpn.fr/ I don't tend to use this program often only when needed rather than let it run the whole time but hope it helps. Steam Rules :p
Lovell
Whats your ISP? I only ever get this problem when I have problems with my Internet and a few ISPs also throttle steam.

Sir Topham Hatt
Virgin Media :/ A silly ISP I know, but the only one I can get that's cheaper than BT.
ViZioN
Virgin Media :/ A silly ISP I know, but the only one I can get that's cheaper than BT. I wondered whether we'd see a thread on Neowin about it hehe. There's a couple of threads about it on the Steam forums too. I've been having the same problem all tonight. It's apparently problem with Virgin Media, not Steam. Have a look on VM's status page, theres a national problem accessing sites in the US. Although saying that, I'm in Edinburgh and I've managed to log onto Steam around 10pm tonight. Hopefully be fixed for you soon, if it isn't already :p

Sir Topham Hatt
It worked last night though. Maybe Virgin put an extra 50p in the metre!
SuperKid
Thats strange because my virgin internet seems to be playing up now, i keep getting disconnected randomly from xfire? it would just log itself out as connection lost, but login with no problems or hangs / delays at all. Same with ventrilo, it just disconnects me from the server and i rejoin with low ping and no problems, its strange. Will just have to wait and see.
