My 360 'Zephyr' just broke

Recommended Posts

If I put that much money into a system, I wouldn't just give up. However, seeing as you hardly touched it for 2 years, I'm guessing you didn't care about eating the money anyway.

If you didn't have a house, you could of just sold the console and games for extra cash.

Sucks your console went under, but this new hardware.. the life expectancy seems to be a few months to a few years.. too short for a console. Although people expect consoles to live forever.. I really wish they did.. but it will never happen with new age technology.. the parts are made so cheaply with so much plastic, they can not compete with legacy systems.

Who said that?

Audioboxer opens up his PS3 to clean it out. Does that seriously void the warranty?

You sir must be young or confused and dont know anything about warrantys. PS3 and Xb360 are WAY DIFFERENT in build.

If you took the faceplate off and took the Microsoft sticker under the faceplate off, you sir have just screwed yourself out of fixing your system for free.

Instead of jumping the gun so fast, you should of sat back and watched this thread / done some research. You could of called or checked the date on your console or register it on microsoft's site to see if you were still in 3 year red ring / e74 error.

I hope you realize you just made a big mistake.

My Sega Genesis and NES still work to this day. That's close to a 20 year lifespan. So I find it hard to believe they suddenly can't make a console that lasts more than a few years at most.

Well, you're a plonker for voiding your warranty when it seems you are within the 3 years that MS give you. Now you will either have to fix the console yourself via whatever the latest and greatest trick is; buy a new one or go without an xbox.

And yes, AB does take his PS3 apart to clean it.

The level of sophistication of todays consoles are crazy compared to the original NES and co.

There's a lot more advanced technology, there's a ton more to be mindful of in today's consoles - One of which is heat, that has caused / is causing problems for both consoles. Comparing the consoles of today with those from 10 years ago is daft.

And only does so because his warranty ended a long time ago. It was no longer covered so there's nothing stopping him.

@V-99 ODST, you on the other hand were still covered by your 3 years extended warranty, but not anymore! Now your only option is to attempt fixing it yourself with the x-clamp fix or the "penny trick".

If you need help feel free to ask, quite a few of us have done it around here. It's very simple though.

Also, that new Sonic 2D HD game isn't coming out any time soon, so don't worry about missing out on it. Same goes for Splinter Cell.

V-99, sorry to hear, but you have plenty of time before the holidays. Talk to support and see if they'll replace it for free still, since it's your first time asking for a replacement. You had a good run, i'm on my third, actually the first two melted a GPU and ringed, then i gave one to a friend, then bought a new Arcade six months ago...and you don't have to wait for the next Xbox, don't be silly. The Jasper build works very well, no overheating, no noise. Get MS to send you a new replacement and you're set.

You only void the warranty if you break the sticker seal in the front of the console when you open it up, I can tell you from experience that if you are careful with the sticker you can make it look like it hasn't been opened and they will still repair it.

Good times.

The seal on the front didn't tear apart but half of the panel shows some sticker residue, but if you press on it with the stick on top it doesn't look like it's been messed with.

It's the silver sticker that says "Microsoft" right?

Thanks treemonkey for that info

You can try your luck, they've had so many repairs they probably aren't very strict on it anymore. But you are taking a gamble.

TreeMonkey is referring to methods like using a hair dryer or steaming the stickers off. You've already ripped the sticker so those aren't gonna work for you.

There has been a lot of advancements in technology, like Sethos said.

More to go wrong with the consoles. But they really don't make them like they use it, simply because they are penny pinchers. If they invested more into testing and maintaining a good quality product, they would of saved money in the return, but instead thought it was necessary to push out a rushed product.

Technology and software is the only business were you can deliver a bad quality product to customers, and people will accept it.

No other industry would stand for such poor standards in this world.

I would love to see a computer now-a-days go against a computer from the late 80's. Those things are still running today.. how many computers have you gone through already in your life time?

Man sorry to hear that but I am on my 3rd 360, which so far has held up better than my launch 360 or its replacement, and has been alive and kicking for about a year and a half now (knocks on wood) but definitely can share your grief....on another note, though, I still love my 360 way more than my PS3 even if it does have the chance of RROD. More exclusives I like, better controller, better online. PS3 (I love my MGS4 bundled fatty) is sweet, with BC and 4 USB ports and flash readers and of course I use Blu Ray for movies, but I love me some 360 way more. Here's to a fast recovery to a new unit as we are enterting the best time of gaming in the year.

You guys won't believe this but I set my 360 flat on its surface and it doesn't RROD anymore, it only does it when I stand it up vertically.

I don't understand why that is though but I'm relieved it's working.

I don't know why you act surprised, putting the xbox in an horizontal position will make it "breath" better. As all ventilation places are not covered. If you set it vertical, you also risk the games and your reading lenses if you happen to move the xbox when a disc is playing.

better call MS and talk to them ... better safe than sorry ... and if it does rrod and MS would not look at it at all then open it up put 4 cents or whatever where is needed and then you'll be fine ... hopefully

Maybe because it was vertical, the heat sinks were maybe leaning away from the chip. And putting it horizontally makes it sit properly just a guess.

That's a fair assessment to make.

pssh this console has taken me for a ride..

^That is exactly the case. Older systems were known for stressed heatsinks when standing up since they were cheaply help in place.

You should keep it laying down and CALL MICROSOFT AND GET IT REPAIRED. Until it RROD's again and then you make another mistake by trying to fix it yourself and it permanently breaks.

Just be safe then sorry.
