DrunknMunky Veteran Posted September 10, 2009 Veteran Share Posted September 10, 2009 I've been checking this game out recently, it releases in 2 weeks time on 360 exclusively and it looks pretty damn nice. Unlike other snow boarding games (SSX, Amped etc) you don't board down one side of the mountain. In StokEd the mountains are proper open worlds with 360 rotation. And there's more than one mountain! Hazzah! And further more, dynamic weather! :D It's the first snowboarding game to have this, SSX and the like it was always scripted when you accessed a particular area of the mountain. It's about time a snow boarding game did this, and although it doesn't look like it'll have the speed or flashiness of SSX, maybe it will do what Skate did for skateboarding games. I've noticed quite a bit of frame rate drops in the videos, but I'm guessing that's down to the sheer size of the mountain and detail in them. Anyway, I'm pretty excited for it. This generation is desperately lacking snowboarding games. Here's some videos.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lwVJwqs39go.swf (http://www.gametrailers.com/video/mountains-in-stoked/46345) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=octjxjX1sDg.swf (http://www.gametrailers.com/video/developer-diary-stoked/43348) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ilZnAINb50.swf (http://www.gametrailers.com/video/dynamic-weather-stoked/42306)
t0mbi
I remember seeing videos for this last year. Totally went off my radar :p as long as its better than Shaun White's Snowboarding, i'll be happy :D And if the control scheme is like Skate, ill be PRETTY STOKED :(
Dead_Monkey
This game is already out in the US (has been for a while). You may be receiving a tweaked/tuned version for Europe. If you want, I can record and post some HD videos tonight. The team that did this is the same group that worked on the Amped series (you'll recall that they were all fired and their studio was shut down after Amped 3, well they went and formed a new studio), and the game is pretty much the same as Amped 3, but they more or less nixed the wackiness, and they changed up the set of tricks a bit (carving is deprecated in favor of butter, which is now a little different as well at least from how it was in Amped 2). They did an excellent job picking the soundtrack again, lots of interesting new music to discover (Austrian rap group Texta for instance).
DrunknMunky Veteran Posted September 11, 2009 Author Veteran Share Posted September 11, 2009 Oh really, I never knew that. Hell I didn't even know the Amped guys went bust. I wasn't really a fan of Amped 3, but will I like this?

Hell I didn't even know the Amped guys went bust.I wasn't really a fan of Amped 3, but will I like this? No way of knowing. I like it, but I also like Amped 3. Amped 3 feels more polished to me, but the same concepts are in both games and the snow effects are better in Stoked. There's no storyline in Stoked, per se, just an expanded version of the race a pro challenges from Amped.I haven't really played "the competition," so I can't comment on how it stands up relative to other games. trag3dy
Looks like a cool game. But is it just me or does it look like the game is running at a really low fps?

Tbh I'm not concerned about a story. In fact I'd prefer it if there wasn't one at all. As long as the game has solid controls, it's fun and has customizing options for my boarder then I'm happy (Y) If the gameplay is too slow and doesn't give you the rush like snow boarding should then I'll prob hate it. TheFlusher
Oh yeah I played this one, it's much better than shaun white snowboarding, and it's $20 cheaper as well! at least it doesn't sink the ship.... ;)
mail
Amped 3 was awesome but this game looks a little too serious.
Dead_Monkey
There is significant customization (down to width of the board and the angle of your bindings). I just played several hours of it because I'd been distracted with other games for a while. It's a similar kind of progression to Amped 3, where you have challenges all over the mountain, you hit them to earn fame points (they changed this, there used to be bronze, silver, gold, now you just get a single fame point for beating the challenge). There are also objectives that you need to achieve to open up a challenge with a pro boarder specific to that mountain. You can also earn two fame points for setting a new score record (typically beat 50,000) from each of the drop points. Once you gain enough fame points, you get noticed by the media, and there are photo ops, these are challenges in separate areas of the mountain. You'll also gain sponsors this way. Sponsors get you gear, and you can defect from one sponsor and join with another competing sponsor. You can have three sponsors at a time. There are also extended challenges for sponsors and against the pros, where you need to execute about two out of three specified tricks within the space between gates. You can also just ignore all of that and freestyle. The speed is good, and the game has a quick restart for challenges (hit the back button) when you suspect you might fail, and when you do fail, you can immediately restart with B. There are a number of mountains open from the start, and there are additional mountains that will open up based on your performance with sponsors. Sponsors and photo ops get you lots of fame points (for instance, you get 25 fame for your first sponsor). Also the entire trick system is mapped to the sticks and the analog triggers. Apparently this is similar to EA's Skate, which I haven't played. It took me quite a bit of getting used to, since this is not the way Amped 3 did things. There are other things in the game as well, you can earn pilot licenses for each of the mountains that let you freely cruise around for drops, and you get a camera once you have completed enough photo ops. Differences vs Amped 3: No crazy storyline or animated cutscenes. Carving out, nose/tail riding and butter in. Added hucking (hold the left or right trigger to get extra spin in one direction on your spins). Changed styling a little (this is pretty similar) No mojo or impressing people, to own the mountain you need to own all the challenges No more rankings on challenges, succeed or fail Photo ops no longer in the regular areas of the mountain Pros no longer in the regular areas of the mountain No more sleds (or crazy sleds like couches) Added helicopters (the flying things) Better snow, day cycle (although it goes directly from dusk to dawn for some reason), weather effects The mountain maps have been changed so that you can only see things that you would be able to see from that vantage point, more or less, this is kind of a pain in the ass. Humans are uglier, equipment is prettier Fine tuning of equipment Equivalent but different soundtrack Real world mountains instead of fictional ones Button based grabs replaced with the right stick, spins and flips on the left stick (probably the same, can't remember) New camera views (two third person views, two helicopter views, change on the fly with the left button) Fame directly tied to challenges instead of based on the number of people that you've tricked in front of with a full meter. If you played Amped 3, you'll see familiar names and hear familiar voices, but for the most part this feels like a ground-up complete makeover of the core ideas from Amped 3 (open world mountain, challenges, earning and unlocking things). It's not really "more serious" but it's real world based and doesn't have the fantasy storyline of Amped 3. Amped 3 is a really special game because of the total craziness of it, you've got the videogame themed challenges, the bizarre characters and costumes, etc. Stoked isn't that game, but it is really good. You should own both, IMHO. I've kind of burned out my right thumb for the time being, but maybe tomorrow I'll post some video. I recorded some today, but I was in full-on trying to remember how to play and learn the new system mode, and I forgot to turn the recorder back on when I got good :)
DrunknMunky Veteran Posted September 12, 2009 Author Veteran Share Posted September 12, 2009 Wow thanks for the in depth review. From what you've written and the videos I've watched, I can't wait to play it. Definitely sounds like my kind of game (Y) I really do think this game has probably gone under the radar and should deserve more praise. If it's doing all these things right and very little is wrong with the game, it could be a start of more competition in the snowboarding genre. Hopefully it garners more support in EU and takes off like Skate did.
.KICK
Will they be releasing a demo you reckon? I don't know if they released one on the US Marketplace.
DrunknMunky Veteran Posted September 12, 2009 Author Veteran Share Posted September 12, 2009 I've not heard any talks of one :/
Dead_Monkey
There is no demo on the US Marketplace for Stoked, sorry. I think the publisher is a really small outfit. The US publisher was Destineer, and I guess they've been acquired (or were already part of) Zushi, which is some tiny publisher in England that does Premier League management simulator games. Basically, no money, no marketing. They still managed to put out an incredible game though. If you're interested in a 40 minute 720p60 video of me playing (well and failing repeatedly too), you can download it here. Sorry about the limited upstream, I've only got 2mbits up these days :/ http://falcomadol.dyndns.org:4280/Stoked.MP4 It's about a gigabyte, it's not a demo, but I think it's pretty representative. MightyJordan
Hmm, after watching Dead_Monkey's video, I'm in two minds about whether to buy it or not. It looks like a very basic game, but that explains the ?40 RRP. Even though I've currently got it on pre-order at GAME.co.uk for ?25, I'm not entirely sure. It does seem to be like Skate on snowboards. That's not a bad thing though. One thing that concerns me is if it's got a lot of replay value, but seeing as there's 5 mountains, and dynamic weather to change the layout sometimes, it looks like it does deliver on that front. Hell, I'm gonna keep the pre-order!:p:p The only concern I have is making sure I have the money for all the games I've got pre-ordered for this month. First off, there's Need for Speed: Shift, which will cost me just ?20, as I'm using the voucher code, and my mum is paying ?15 towards it. Then, another ?20 for Halo 3: ODST. And then ?25 for Stoked. I've gotta get my Zune sold off A.S.A.P:p33; :p
MightyJordan
I just had an email from GAME about StokEd. It's been pushed back to October 2nd.
DrunknMunky Veteran Posted September 17, 2009 Author Veteran Share Posted September 17, 2009 Wuuuuuuuut That sucks :( It's gonna be drowned by the ODST launch now. If it's pushed back till Oct 2nd, that means the PAL release went gold 2 weeks ago tomorrow, at least. Wtf with the delay..
MightyJordan
It's gonna be drowned by the ODST launch now. Speaking of which, I also got an email from GAME today saying that because of high demand for ODST, they were gonna take the money from my account in advance! At the moment, there is only a fiver in there. The money I got through PayPal from selling my old headphones have finally turned up in my account, but only on the statement list at the moment. It hasn't updated my balance, so I've got no idea if the money's actually there or not. I really hope it is.
DrunknMunky Veteran Posted September 17, 2009 Author Veteran Share Posted September 17, 2009 Yeah .KICK told me he got an email too. He used one of the old GAME voucher's & glitch and so far it's gone under their radar. I really want to know why some of them go undetected and others are cancelled. If you have trouble with your ODST order just amend the payment options in My Account. Ask your mum or something to pay for it so you don't lose the order, and then pay her back when you get the money into your account?

Yeah, I used a ?10 voucher ages ago, and it was back when they were selling it for ?30, so I've currently got it for ?20. The best I can do with my mum is ask her to transfer the ?10 she owes me for NFS Shift. Hopefully they won't take the money out until tomorrow. If so, I'll be safe, as my wages go in tomorrow, so if I can get the tenner from her into my account by then, I'm safe. EDIT: And I worked out what happened to the PayPal money. They've already taken most of it out, as GAME put the money I spent on Microsoft Points back into my account (again), and then took it out yesterday. It's bloody annoying when they do that! The last time they did that, I ended up in an overdraft! Luckily, I managed to sort it out before I got charged nearly ?30. The most annoying thing is that I'm still waiting for a ?35 refund to come back into my PayPal account. It was refunded yesterday, and it says so on my PayPal page, but it hasn't updated my balance there.

MightyJordan
SCRATCH THAT!!!!!! Thanks to DrunknMunky, I'm sending this back as soon as it arrives. There's a bloody new version of Stoked being released; the Big Air Edition: http://gettingstoked.com/blog/ It's got everything the original has, but with new stuff that won't be arriving in the old one via DLC. And it's a pretty big list. New racing modes. Marked trails. New Big Air competitions. A new event called the "Burton European Open". Two brand new mountains: Laax, and K2. Excuse me for this, but:                                   Who reckons we won't see this version over here until about next summer? MightyJordan
Scratch that again. I'm keeping StokEd when it arrives tomorrow. Regardless of Bongfish planning to screw us Lost Planet style, I'm gonna play the hell out of it. If it's good, I'll get the Big Air Edition when it comes out here. If all the Big Air Edition content comes to the original version through DLC, then that's a bonus! :D
