PNWDweller
I have had this problem a lot with my system but not after Itunes 9 or other updates. It was in Leopard before I upgraded... I have tracked it down to the spinning up of my asleep firewire drive. Very odd situation, but it is the case. I solved it by telling the system to not let it sleep for 20 minutes since I tend to hit flash sites every so often. If you have any external drives, may want to check if this is the issue... Snakehn
well it looks like it might not be related to itunes if some of you guys have had it happening for a while, for me, after upgrading to SL, it was working flawlessly until yesterday when i installed iTunes 9, i reset safari and reinstalled flash and still happening. edit: ok this is getting on my nerves, can't even go to Gmail because i get the stupid beach ball, Great! instant.human
i have some odd issues with safari aswell. i only updated yesterday to 4.0.3, along with itunes 9 because i didnt have the time so i unfortunately cannot tell if it is because of the safari update or because of itunes 9 but sometimes when i have... say igoogle open and open another tab, safari gets unresponsive but not in a beachballish way but rather that bottons appear not clickable and the new page doesnt render. i get "hands" where they should be on the new page and where are no clickable links on igoogle so the new page is kinda there but not visible. igoogle is still there but not clickable. gees. and the interface aswell, i cannot click on reload or anything. safari doesnt appear as not responsive though, i can click on the x-botton but it doesnt show the x. the window closes and i can open a new window again... pretty confusing and annoying... i wasnt able to figure out if it was because of flash or ajax or something... it just... stops rendering. or something. i am still on 10.5.7 with safari 4.0.3 and itunes 9.... before the updates everything was fine... but then itunes 9 came along. or the safari update, who knows... I'm having the same issue too and found out it was caused by my two sleeping external hard drives (connected by firewire).

Apple has sure been hitting some pretty low marks lately. But then again so has Google.
