But what i wish to know is im a long time windows person, and know everything to go with windows! OSX is the a big change for me, but i wish to learn. The biggest tip I can give you is with installing software. If the software doesn't come with an installer package similar to Windows then what you need to do is drag the program icon from the installer to your application folder. Then you can unmount the installer. And she's all done!

i installed OSX 10.5.7 the other day on vanilla, updated to 10.5.8 perfectly fine and all is well.

though i dual boot with windows 7, and since i game OSX doesnt get loaded too often.

installing software really confused me at first.

Why on earth would you ever go from Windows to OSX?

Ya, same thought went through my head.

I'm actually buying an iMac soon, but only because the hardware is sleek and nice. I'm most likely going to install Windows on it, a big slap in the face to Mac fanboys.

No offense but it's kind of stupid. You can have a much faster PC with a nice big monitor for less.

There are a lot of people who convert. It's a way of life, so get used to it. Some people grow bored with the Windows OS like myself. I used Windows for years before I jumped to OSX full time. It's a process and a personal choice, just like you have your choice to continue using Windows. Speaking of which, have you even ever used OSX?

men...i think you have never used OSX.

Very conservative or fanboyish way of thinking.

In my rig OSX is faster, very snappy...ok...resuming, it full filled my expectations.

Do most updates kill it or do they install fine for the most part? Every OSX86 install i've ever done ****s itself during the install of an OS update.

The update from 10.5.5 to 10.5.6 broke my last install.

On my recent try the last few updates for 10.5 didn't break for me. I updated from 10.5.5 to 10.5.7 through software update with no problems. I went from 10.5.7 to 10.5.8 using an upgrade delta thing that some people put together.

The setup I am using is far from vanilla too. I had to use custom kernels and kexts for just about everything.

Just curious, did you install Leopard or Snow Leopard

Leopard at the moment till i can use OSX86 with no problems, like i said im very new to OSX, and am lookin forward to using more and more!!!

Why on earth would you ever go from Windows to OSX?

im doing it more for the knowlege... i know nothing about OSX and want to learn more about how to use it, and the power behind it. Ive been a windows user since win95... and a linux user also since redhad 7. So thats why, dont get me wrong windows has good points to it... but i am around alot of computers, and mac's and have never took the time to get to know it!

I've been using OSX for a while now--about a year--and I can say that after the initial GeeWhiz! moments wear off, you being to realize that it has plenty of flaws too. Is it just me or is Finder the most useless thing in the world? It is so hard to simply move files around. There is no double pane and you can't cut/paste items.

Maybe I'm doing it wrong, but if I want to move one file to another folder, I either have to open another copy of finder and drag it over or I have to copy and then paste and then go back and delete the duplicate file.

The way I see it, neither Windows nor OSX is strictly superior to the other. They have different strengths and weaknesses.

The only straight up advantage that a Mac has on a non-Mac is that you can easily install both Windows and OSX on one machine without any hacking or hassle.

Cut and Paste is annoying, but there are ways to get used to doing those things other ways. I just click and hold the file(s) I'm moving and then drag and navigate through finder. It's not that hard to do it this way.

There is no double pane and you can't cut/paste items.

Well, there is a reason that there's no cut and paste. Think about it: you cut a file, go to paste it somewhere else but for some reason you decide to cut or copy something else, forgetting that you previously cut that item from Finder. Poof, file gone.

Now, I know that's not how it works in the Windows Explorer, but the idea is that if you stay true to how cut and paste should work, a cut and paste implementation in a file explorer either breaks the semantics of cut and paste or has the possibility to delete your files without any confirmation or "trash can" step.

I'm personally a fan of the idea of "keeping" something in its original location until you paste it somewhere else, be it text, a file, etc., but unfortunately, that's not how cut and paste was originally conceived.

OS X is a lot of fun to tinker around with. I need to get my OSX86 partition working again. I had duel boot going for me... but I noticed that some things in OSX were laggy, and found out that Quartz Extreme 2.0 wasn't enabled for some reason. Went through some hacks to try and get it to work and ended up not being able to boot at all.

My best advice: find some way of backing up your OSX partition from Windows especially before trying to do an OSX86 hack of some sort, or if there is an update from Apple that causes issues. That way if something goes hay-wire, you can perform a restore from Windows.

I joined OSX86 so i could use Logic Pro, but now i found myself using it for almost everything, i am dual booting OSX and 7... i keep 7 because my GFX card does not support quartz extreme so i've got no gaming.

I find OSX to be more responsive and snappier on my hardware

The only thing i hate as already mentioned is file moving/copying/general organisation... it reminds me of being on something like windows 3.1.. folders are ugly and not easy to organize.... i seem to have stuff all over the place which annoys me

Why are you browsing the Mac Software Discussion & Help forum? Just to troll about switching from Windows to OS X?

A big slap how? You're the genius who is buying an 'overpriced' machine just to install Windows. I could personally care less what you do with your computer, is it a big slap in the face to Windows fanboys everywhere that I installed Snow Leopard on my PC?

  • 2 weeks later...
Can someone suggest a specific graphics card that runs flawlessly, supports Quartz Extreme and so on? UK models.

I'm using the nVidia GeForce 9800GT 1GB PCIe card. It actually needed an extra kext installed to get working properly but a quick search on InsanelyMac had that sorted. Anything below the 1GB for this model works natively.

Yep, it supports Quartz Extreme, has hardware accelerated core image, and supports rotation.

As a non gamer, but someone who wants to do light video editing, do you suggest I go for a 512mb or 1gb model?

Go the 1GB. Besides it's only a few dollars more expensive. Don't be stingey on the RAM either!
