Xbox 360 802.11n Wi-Fi Adapter Hits the FCC

Recommended Posts

Oh yeah if you buy a cheap brand then you can grab something for less than ?50 easy:pp Doesn't mean it's going to be good though lol.

I should start plugging Cisco around here some more, brownie points etc:laugh::

But still, going down the route of using a router/AP and wired connections doesn't suit everyone, as you know very well;))

Using Xbox 360 + 802.11 N card is not the same as PS3 + wired N:pp

Well everyone has to buy a Wireless N router for it to even be worth it in any of these scenarios

To be fair, a lot of ISP's are supplying wireless N routers now. I know Virgin Media and BT are. And I don't think they are that expensive to buy anyway, probably about the same price as Wireless G routers were a couple of years ago.

It's a 1m cable (or less if possible) from your PS3 ethernet, the access point would be under your TV. That's hardly the same as the argument of running a 30m cable through your house.

As for talking about cheaper access points, I really doubt the 360 wireless N adapter is going to be the equivalent quality of a ?120 access point, considering the mark ups MS put on accessories, it's probably not nearly the quality spec it should be for a $100 addon. It's for a games console though, we don't need something that would hold up a business server.

It's not exactly the same setup (for one you need another power socket for the PS3 setup), but it's the same results. It's doable on both consoles, the 360 because MS can release an addon, the PS3 because it's open about 3rd party hardware.

@Welsh, ^ Not quite. If you want something good it'll cost you at least ?100.

I'm not sure if we'll see a hike in temp prices while final N routers reach the market, but I wouldn't be surprised.

@AB, yes it's doable on the PS3, but not wirelessly is my point. That is until Sony update (if they ever do) the wifi card inside the PS3. Until then the only solution is a wired one, even if it is a 1m cable.

Again that's assuming your access point is under your tv, which it shouldn't be (a bad decision to put it there).

Not necessarily. :p Sony could upgrade the PS3's built-in WiFi adaptor too.

What about us with older consoles? We need to pay again for WiFi?

Well everyone has to buy a Wireless N router for it to even be worth it in any of these scenarios, just comes down to what can you buy another Wireless N router/access point for compared to the 360 wireless adapter.

Either way I'm just pointing out it's possible on the PS3, dunno if Ricardo knew that.

I've had one for 3 years now, I'm not the only one I guess...

Duh, it's possible with every Ethernet capable equipment :p. I know many people have been doing that with the 360.

Fair enough, I'm not really sure whats good or not with these lol. Been a while since I've had to look for a new router.

But as I said, quite a few ISP's are giving Wireless N routers now, and can only imagine that will increase now its been made final.

1 accessory will be more expensive than the PS3 Slim? What you been smoking today Jian :p

I was kidding due to the insane prices of 360 accessories :p. But you know, it really wouldn't surprise me at all?: .

Just thought it was worth mentioning, Draft N and N bases WiFi devices/routers are two different kettles of fish.

I've never had a Draft N based router or device get anywhere near 200mbit/s throughput, let alone 300mbit.

The Xbox WiFi dongle is apparently full N rather than draft according to the reports surfacing thusfar, it might be possible to get more than 3MB/sec constant via WiFi meaning XBMC might *actually* be reliable via this.

It was just a matter of time. This is what's great with Xbox 360's accessorized approach unlike PS3. Those who want wi-fi N on their Xbox 360 have to just get this new one and get HD streaming ability over wi-fi. With PS3 you are stuck with G standard.

You gotta admit though.. this wasn't a problem until now.

Youre right there, Virgin are supplying me with a N Wireless Router so hopefully this adapter isn't too expensive. Will just use ethernet if not.

It's not possible because 802.11 N was only finalised this week :p

Anything on the market right now is draft N. It's not the same as final.

And Wireless N routers / AP's are expensive. So don't count on it being a cheaper combo than this 360 dongle (or even the old one which you can buy for like ?35 these days).

Didn't the people who finalised N say that all draft N ones will work fine with the completed spec?

Inter-operable, yes. That doesn't mean that they will reach maximum speeds, distances, etc.

I mean, N routers are inter-operable with B/G as well.

Well no, but if it all generally works, hypothetically it means someone could buy an adaptor to plug into the Ps3 to get an N signal?

No that wouldn't work unfortunately. First of all there isn't a way to select any other device from the OS. If you choose wireless from the network settings, it will just use the built in option.

I meant using an accesspoint via ehternet to connect, would that work?

Ignoring the price of the bits and bobs needed.
