Activision: Guitar Hero Turns $50 into $500

Activision Blizzard CEO, Robert - Bobby - Kotick, has taken his threat to stop supporting PlayStation a little further; he's looking to get away from consoles altogether at some point in the not too distant future.

Speaking at the recent Deutsche Bank Securities Technology Conference in San Francisco, Kotick states, "You should expect to see many of our products will be playable on the television independent of a console".

According to Bobby, that's "350 million users who may not be tethered to an Xbox 360 or a PlayStation 3..." No mention of untethering from the Wii or PC though.

He also went on to explain the money-making capabilities of Guitar Hero, providing a little historical insight as well as giving up his margins:

"In the last cycle of videogames you spent $50 on a game, played it and took it back to the shop for credit.

"Today, we'll sell you for $100 a guitar. You might add a microphone or drums, you might buy two or three expansions packs, different types of music. Over the life of your ownership you'll probably buy around 25 additional song packs in digital downloads. So, what used to be a $50 sale is a $500 sale today."

But what does Activision Blizzard look to make form this? Lots, that's what.

"And the best of all margins – the 25% operating margin business – has the potential as we can see with World of Warcraft to be a 50% operating margin business. What used to be a low 20s return on invested capital business is now growing to a plus 40% return on invested capital business."

I really REALLY am beginning to hate this guy more and more. Greedy SOB.

I thought EA were bad, this guy takes it to the next level, i hope they drop consoles altogether and make people buy all new instruments for a standalone TV box so i can laugh my ass off when it flops and this guy loses his pension/job.

Meh..don't buy what they are selling if u don't like it. Seems simple enough.

I've always liked Activision and Blizzard games and still think they are much better than EA. They at least have proper quality control.

And yet every one of you jackasses will buy MW2.

so because we dont agree with his business decisions we should punish ourselves from what is/should be a great game.. (possible GotY)???

Uh, "punish ourselves"? Its not like our lives depended on a videogame.

In the end its a fight between ideals/principles and hypocrisy/stupidity.

There going to lose sales over this, in fact, this may boost EA's Rockband.

The idea sound... but you miss, xbox in specifically, the social / online grouping appeal of the game.

ok.. so punish is an odd choice of words but the concept is still there... there will not be enough impact of people boycotting MW2 for it to be worth it to skip getting the game

What a douche.

If there were ever a contest for "guy who needs a punch in the face", I think he would be a great candidate.

I won't be buying MW2 when it comes out, but then I was going to wait a while, now I'm just going to get it second hand out of spite.

I severely doubt it. GH & RB are terricasual games. Hell he could go out, sacrifice new born babies and a majority of the people who bought the game would be non the wiser.

A standalone GH makes complete sense to me. These music games don't at all require all the tech that the 360/PS3 offers and there are ALOT of people who like these games that don't want to play any other console game.

Also am I missing something or are you guys hating on this guy just because he talked about more profits? Next time you get a raise, refuse it or go punch yourself in the face.

and what ideals/principles are you speaking of?

So yeah, I'm just gonna stick with Rock Band from now on...

EDIT: Or buy MW2, but pre-owned just to shove it to the man :p

Also, is it really necessary to post that man's face? Every time I see I have to hold my lunch down :/
