I generally base my purchasing decisions on the opinions given on discussion forums (though not gaming specific forums as they tend to have very childish members!), and also watch a few youtubes of the game in question to get an idea of how it plays.

Looking for a play test review hardly ever occurs to me

I generally watch video reviews from IGN and GameTrailers, however they don't usually influence my decision to by, it's just a chance to watch some gameplay and hear what different people think about the game.

I'm surprised no one's mentioned GameRankings - a compilation of all the rankings rolled into one final average score.

Most people probably use metacritic for their average scoring system.

I generally play the demo and watch gameplay movies. Also read a few forums to get other users perspective.

We are all different, in what "we" per-sieve is a good game, it personal opinion. Much like TV & Films. I decide myself if its good or not. Magazine and website reviewers are good for the initial idea on what the game is like, but I do research before buying.

Hence I hate infamous but love prototype on the PS3 (its my opinion :p )

Sethos - I count the amount of bile produced, if it's over 5mm I tend to avoid the game. ;) ;D
Yeah I have to agree, Sethos is a good indicator if I'll like a game or not.

Really? His hate of Arkham Asylum and love of Horse grooming games concerns me

Gametrailers and PCPowerplay Australia (though not much anymore) to gain a general idea of the game and see some gameplay shots/videos. For reviews I usually trust gametrailers since their reviews are pretty good and fun to watch.

Oh I didn't mean the games he likes are the games I like. Usually I just play the opposite to what he does  :p

Good ones:

Gametrailers - Very objective, well organized, I don't have to watch a nerd talking (gamespot :p) and the guys voice sounds good

(Y)

IGN: only for Jessica Chobot (well she never reviews anything, I know)

Meristation: very nice reviews from people that enjoy games, but oh! it's in spanish hehe

Bad Ones:

Sethos - oh nooo!! it's like hearing my Scottish grandma ranting because I never call her!!

Gamespot: booooooh!

To be honest, renting takes a lot of angst away as far as game reviews. That's why I love gamefly. If I love a game that much, then I keep it for 20% off retail price.

:p

But seriously, I don't really follow reviews. I play demos of almost every game if there is one, and I'll make my own judgment on whether to buy it or not, instead of judging the games by their Metacritic scores. If I did the latter, I would have bought Batman Arkham Asylum, and DiRT 2... and Shadow Complex...... and inFAMOUS......... and Prototype............ and Red Faction Guerilla............... and Battlefield 1943.................. and Call of Juarez..................... and NHL 10........................ and Killzone 2........................... and Ghostbusters.............................. and Resident Evil 5................................. and Battlestations Pacific.................................... and Ashes Cricket 2009....................................... and Bionic Commando.......................................... ahh, looks like I've run out.

Oh, and F.E.A.R. 2. :p

Gamespot....very trustworthy.

Gamespot by far is the most biased website listed, they have never given a lower rating then an 8 if they have advertisements for that game.

Most games gamespot reviews that get low ratings then when the game gets popular they automatically make a statement that "Oh we didn't play the full version, so when we played the game it wasn't full developed so we gave it such a low rating". Case in point "Lost Odyssey", gave it a bad review before it came out, other sites bombarded the gamespot forums, and people complained and finally they said they didnt review the full game.

I read the user reviews of any combination of those sites. I think that the user reviews at Gamespot tend to be the best. Their % seems to align with what I end up thinking about the game for the most-part. Their in-house reviews seem bias to me, however.

Well, I use GameSpot because they have a special feature called "Average of the critics", so it calculates an average score for the game according to like 20 critics website. Very good!

I like to just watch movies and screenshots and usually I buy the games that are really popular (yeah, popular = good in my head). I don't have money to spend on a game that simply blows.
