Any good recent RPGs?

Another vote for The Witcher here. As a big fan of the classic Bioware RPGs, I can say The Witcher is a worthy successor. Although Dragon Age is going to be much better.

Another vote for Risen, it's kind of a sequel to Gothic 3. Gothic 3 I recommend playing with all the community patches - they've really enhanced the gameplay and most of the positive changes have been carried through to Risen.

Mount & Blade - I've tried it but found the combat clunky but you might like it.

Demos for both Mount & Blade and Risen can be downloaded on Steam.

Another vote for The Witcher here. Get the enhanced directors cut edition. I absolutely loved this game. Also if you're looking for some hack/slash Diablo style gameplay, try Titan Quest.

And of course, Dragon Age comes out in November, that game is going to be absolutely awesome, nobody does RPGs like Bioware, I can't wait for that one!

Funny thing. I thought Fallout 3 was 'meh' (huge fan of the first 2). I've got a few of the DLC packs, and I run it pretty heavily modded... It just feels empty, like there is nothing to do. My opinion of course. How ever, I LOOOOVE Oblivion. Modded out to my liking, I can't get enough.. I've never even completed the MQ and I've owned it since release.

I'm working my way through Risen right now and I'm having a BLAST. My favorite 3D RPG was Gothic 2, and it's more of the same. For me, it feels like I'm getting the right amount of freedom without losing where I am in the game (like I did with Morrowind).

Dragon Age: Origins is coming soon (november 3rd). Another Bioware RPG and it's looking pretty awesome.

Check out this video:

Borderlands, a comicy cell-shaded "Role Playing FPS" is coming soon too, October 26th. Not quite as RPG-ish as what you're probably looking for, but it may be worth a look.

Also, a game that's already out is Risen.

I was going to suggest these 3, and of course "The Witcher".

If you can handle the graphics, go get DOSBox and play some abandonware. The original Eye of the Beholder series. Dungeon Hack. And the BG I & II, NWN, etc., have excellent replay value.

DDO is a good option. You can solo it and it's free, for the most part. Start multiple characters and change them up to have a change of pace. And, since it's free, you can leave and come back to it and not feel guilty about spending money and not playing it.

I agree when others mention about Oblivion. One of my most played games, I have all the expansion packs and plug ins. The experience is truly amazing when it has varied weather effects all over the terrain-snow, swamps, mountains, forests, lakes, rivers and so on. Everything gells so well with the situation and the people.

Fallout 3 is not far behind, but the scope is limited in terms of missions. Once you run out of missions, nothing much to do. Number of missions in Oblivion is way higher and it keeps you engaged for quite a considerable time.

I would also recommend The Witcher:Enhanced Edition. Nice work by the developers.

I tried to get into Oblivion multiple times because so many people recommended it and were complete ape **** over it. I even bought the strategy guide thinking if I had direction I'd like it more.

TBH I got more into Morrowind than Oblivion. Something about Oblivion felt very empty to me (pun intended).

I prefer Morrowind over Oblivion, but they are both great games

Can't wait for The Elder Scrolls V
