Modded Xbox thread

Cerbero, your xbox hard drive is probably fragmented. It's going around filling empty spaces with your files and thats slowing it down.

Yup, that was probably it. I just formatted the E partition and now everything is working great. The reason I didn't think of that before is that I bought the Xbox a week ago (new), and didn't get my modchip in there until yesterday, so I didn't think fragmentation was a big possibility.. Ohwell, it's working now :)

can someone explain that really quick? say i drop in a 120gb, do i need to make an 8 gig partition, and have it setup just like the original, and then have a separate 112gb partition for storing games/movies/etc?

What you'll be creating is 6 partitions on that 120GB drive. The original 5 that the normal console has (which eats 8 GB of space). Then the 5th partition will use the rest of the drive space.

Aren't there some MS specific files on the E drive? Won't Live know you've tampered with it?

Well there are save game data and stuff on there, but I just backed that up via FTP before the format. Live stuff might go there too, but I wouldn't know, since I'm not on Live (hate playing games online :)). All the system files are on C: though, so no risk of damaging them.

I formatted my F partition too, so now I have 2 gigs of extra space, w00t :D

"isn't it true that if u modded your xbox.. u can't go on xbox live? Tell me if i'm wrong but i read it off of gamepro a couple months back that if u've modded your xbox that they ban u from their servers permanently. "

They just tag the HD with a key saying no x-box live for oyu. Just turn the chip off to get around it. And admitting to a modded box is illegal. You are all viable for jail time as of now. CONGRATS! I myself dont even own a box.

Admitting to a modded box is illegal

Well, that all depends on what country you live in... And of course we're all running the legal Linux Cromwell BIOS on the chips, so no problem there anyway :shifty:

i've tried gentoox. Its pretty slow.. but give it a try if your really curious. To get usb port i just took the female usb ports from my pc and solderd it too my xbox controller, they take over the memory card/expansion bit. Or you could purchase an adaptor.

as i said it doesnt run that well and surfing the web @ 800x600 makes text some times hard to read. well thats me. but its fun to mess around :)

Has anyone here tried Linux on their box? How would I go about giving that a try? Just curious :p

Well, you should have got the chip with Linux-Cromwell on it originally... If you didn't that's.... Illegal. :p

If you want to get linux on it and right now you have something else (evox or xecutor) you would have to flash your chip. You go get yourself a copy of OZXflash, and the image contained in it already has the cromwell bios on it, which it what you should be flashing with. Unfortunatley, unless you actually have the ozx chip you need to make a 1024k bios image and fluff it with something and burn that to a seperate disk, because an Xecutor 2 Lite chip only takes 1024k bioses usually.

[Edit] Ah.... Just realized what you meant.... Cromwell isn't like Mandrake at all. :p Nevermind [/Edit]

Well, I've tried it, but I never really got it to do much because I didn't have a keyboard adapter. Apparently, SSH is supposed to work with the Debian version, but that didn't happen. Mandrake requires the keyboard to be connected for install (I think) so never tried that one. I got GentooX up and running (after a 3-day compile of X and KDE). But couldn't get X-forwarding running through SSH, so it was fairly useless (other than a proof of concept maybe). Apparently, GentooX has released some precompiled binaries, so that most of the compile work is only for optional components (web browsers, etc.).

Depends on the drive you have. Samsung drives will play almost anything, I have a phillips drive and it's played everything I've put in it so far including CDR and then there's thompson, which struggles to play CDR at all. To get around it use a CD-RW initially, then you can just FTP everything else.

ive been using debian/gentoo on my xbox for browsing in bed and running half life CS/TFC servers on the internet :)

its good to learn linux with, i couldnt do anything in linux before... its better than installing it in your pc cause you cant mess your xbox up if linux wont boot just delete it and ftp it over again

i thought i ran pretty well for browsing/irc and a half life server didnt lag or anything... its only got 64mb of ram but it copes

dont bother using the drive, just ftp everything over... it takes years to read from cdrw

only thing you really need a cdrw is for when you mess someting up and need it to boot up evox etc... most re-writables work havent ever had any trouble from verbainum(sp) ones... they dont usually boot first time tho

well i'm trying to flash my bios first which needs a cdr or cdrw to do it. I just bought some TDK cdrw's and I'm having 0 success with them. :(

get cdr-rw's with 1-4x speed, the cheap ones you know, they work best imo.
