Modded Xbox thread

Heres a couple a questions :D

My PC is being sold to get a G5, I won't have a PC for around 6-8 weeks so I wanna use Xbox Linux. Here's the questions:

1. What's the easiest version of Xbox Linux? Your personal experiences would be helpful, not a link to a FAQ.

2. Can you get USB adapters so I can use my Keyboard and mouse on the Xbox?

3. Can you get a VGA lead so I can use Xbox linux at a higher res? I.e. 1280 x 1024?

Edit, found the USB cables:

Do you reckon y wireless keyboard and mouse would work?

BroChaos, do you mean console-corner.com? When I click on 'accessories' there, it just links me to half.com. And System-mods is out of stock.

GenttoX, because it's the easiest to setup, certainly the bootable distro is nice, but slowed down by the fact that it's run from the DVD drive.

Yes you can, infact I sell them on my website, you can get two for 12.98 plus shipping, however you may be able to find someone else you may want to buy from who is in the UK (I know I prefer to buy from the US since I live in the US).

I know you can get a VGA lead or a VGA box etc, however I don't know much about changing the resolution because I am a total Linux n00b.

I will also say that because of the limitations of the hardware video acceleration, some things can be a bit slow, and of course viewing it on a tv is less than ideal, and remember you are limited with memory.

Having said that it's a nice solution, but if I was going to be without a PC for 6-8 weeks I don't think it's a solution I would prefer. The memory is the least of the worries, the lack of hardware acceleration can be annoying, I don't know if you've ever used a video card with the standard drivers but it's something like that, windows are slow to draw etc, as far as viewing on a tv, it's the equivalent of displaying a Windows desktop using a video cards tv out, again less than ideal...

Yeah, I know, it sucks. But it's only going to be used minimally. I can still use the PC in my parents PC, but they've gotta use it sometime ;) so I can have a quick browse around the net on this. I'm downloading GentooX now.

I wouldn't go so far as to say it sucks, it just needs some refinement, and it's certainly not the type of distro you would use to completely replace a computer.

If you've ever used Mandrake before, and don't really have any strong feelings against it, they have an Xbox version of that distro at the Xbox-Linux site. Debian, too, if that's more you're style. GentooX seems nice, in concept, but compiling packages takes forever due to the slower CPU and limited RAM.

Out of the box it comes with just about everything you'd need so I see no reason to have to compile anything, especially considering this is just a system he would use if he can't use his parents.

Mandrake will also only work on V1 boxes, not 1.1 or above. Debian is nice, but be prepared to spend quite some time setting everything up.

I have the Green Xbox and I believe that's a v1.2? I checked out debian but I'm not really clued up on Linux and it seemed too much effort. Gentoo just seemed easier.

Debian is a lot more trouble as you actually have to install it and configure it, with GentooX you just copy the files over to your e:\ drive and add an item in your dashboards ini file.

The old version of GentooX used to be a pain in the ass because you had to compile everything which took days (literally), of course this means it would take the best advantage of the specific Xbox hardware, but for me it's just not worth the time and trouble.

Well, GentooX was hard to install. Drag and drop I hear you say? hahaha.

It's certainly cumbersome using a joypad for control of the cursor and an on screen keyboard to type. I might just but one of those ?8 adapters so I can use a keyboard. It's surprisingly snappy, no lag in anything.

I just wished my Xbox stopped turning itself off:((

It's totally random. Sometimes it'll fail to turn on, I've gotta move it around, give it a little tap here and there, plug and unplug the power lead :( I emailed the guy and he was cool about it, I can send it back via courier so he can check it out for me, he thinks it might be a something loose inside.

yeah, that's what it sounds like to me. i watched the guy who modded my xbox, he did a pro job. he tugged really hard on every wire he soldered, and they didn't even budge. does yours run around 60c?

which way did your guy do the d0 point?

Temps are CPU 59, MB 45; it's playing The Matrix.

I didn't see the guy who done mine because I bought it premodded in a forum, he went out and bought a load of Green Xboxs to mod and send out. Could also have something to do with the HD I guess, I've got a 40GB in there, perhaps a connection is loose on that.

Make sure your auto-off setting is disabled in the MS Dash. That probably isn't your problem but its worth a shot.

Your temps seem pretty high too, if you have any modding experience yourself you should try some cooling mods. Myself, I put some Arctic Silver 3 (I had some left over from my PC) on my Xbox heat sink and did the 12 volt fan mod. My xbox is noisier now but it never goes above 40C.

I also think it would be a good idea to put a heatsink on the southbridge (MCPX). That chip gets real hot and a lot of Xboxes have died because that chip burnt out.

mines around 60c too. from what i've read in the forums, that's pretty common for a lot of the v1.1 and 1.2 boards...

I asked this question before, and got an answer, but when I searched for it I couldn't find it, so here it is again :) :

What is the type / size of the screw needed for the Xbox Matrix mod chip (it needs to be a bit longer than the original)?
