Dane
Now with the recent price drops of both Playstation and Xbox. I want a gaming system. Both system have the games I want. I want a system that will last. Playstation fits into that group. They last, xbox has issues, that you have to send back, and deal with bull****. Now, with the system I want decent online playing. Playstation has free online gaming, which is great but I am not sure how decent the Playstation network is. Does it go down a lot? Does it have issues? Xbox has online, Xbox Live around $50 a year, kind of ****ty for the price i think. (i've owned it before with the older xbox, and don't think they should charge $50 a year). Xbox is pay, but they don't have issues, so thats a win point for them. The new Playstations use less power, and not loud. The Xbox, at least everyone's that i am near, is like a jet engine taking off! Both are tied in points and I don't know what to do. Playstation is winning me because, less power, not loud, has wifi, free online gaming, annnnnnnd doesn't have issues like xbox has. It loses me because i am not sure how good the online play is since its free. Xbox is winning me because of the price, its cheaper then playstation, and has a better online play. It loses me because of price for online play for a year, because of how loud it is, and because it still has issues. I just wouldn't really trust an xbox at all i don't think. homeboyrocketshoulders
Price shouldnt really be an issue. Yes the PS3 costs more up front, but with the Xbox you have Live, plus stuff you may need like the wireless adapter. Overall, its close, but obviously Xbox costs more in the long run due to Live. PSN is fine, regardless of what Xbox fans will say. But truth be told, there are a lot more people to play with on Live. Personally I'd go with a PS3. With the price drop, I think they'll be selling more and that means more players. In my opinion Xbox has peaked, and PS3 is (very slowly) climbing and closing the gap. Just my opinion. Plus reliability is a big concern to me. And we all know how the Xbox fares in that category.

Yeah the price difference I guess, isn't an issue because I'd be buying a system that I wouldn't have to randomly ship back to Microsoft.
deletedxyz
I would go with the PS3 if you don't mind the lack of backward compatibility with PSX and PS2 games. I personally would wait for a revamp of the Microsoft console (a better edition or something similar) since they have Mass Effect 2 and other games (Fable 2). If the new PS3 had backwards compatibility, I would definitely pre ordered it.

Razorwing
imo, your con on the xbox 360's noise is really irrelevant. You will be turning up your sound system to enjoy your games. So you won't hear it anyway.
majortom1981
How important is blu-ray to you? IF its not then get the 360 .
spenser.d
Noise is irrelevant. People b***h about it, but once you start playing a game, you don't notice it. Xbox Live for the 360 is an extremely different and far superior experience than XBL for the original Xbox. It's worth every penny. As for your last point, you're fairly misinformed. The Xbox 360 doesn't anymore have more issues than your average electronic appliance. Microsoft has fixed the RROD issues and it's really not something you should be worried about. -Spenser

Am i correct? I just want something I can enjoy, and wont have issues. Actually after a quick search here is one. According to a GameInformer article, the Xbox 360 still has a high failure rate, of 54.2 percent, due to the dreaded RROD, e74, and other errors, a number much higher than its current console rivals. The PlayStation 3 had a 10.6 percent failure rate and the Wii was even lower, at 6.8 percent. http://www.afterdawn.com/news/archive/18965.cfm And another. http://blog.seattlepi.com/microsoft/archives/176741.asp http://community.winsupersite.com/blogs/pa...-2-percent.aspx Because of websites like that, and articles, I still believe that they have a high failure rate. madd-hatter
From reading your initial post, it sounds like you've already made your decision. There is nothing wrong with PSN, it never drops or randomly goes down. Go ahead and get a PS3.
Ohwhyme
I have both and am desperately trying to sell the ps3 its just sitting there collecting dust. The only game I want to play on it that is exclusive is Gran Turismo 5. A lot of the exclusives are already coming for the xbox like tekken etc. I like xbox live better however the interface is a lot cooler with the ps3. Tharp Daddy
I have tried both and it really depends, i find both have great shooters, but i (for some reason, not sure why) prefer to play sport games on the PS3, while the 360 (so far) has a superior RPG selection. I don't notice my 360's noise, if you were to sit in a room that has NO other sounds you might notice it, but otherwise no problems. Xbox live is quite awesome, game with devs/celebrity events that are going on constantly, and it frequently has new features being added and such, but if it's for just pure online gaming then both are great, but i find because of the larger install base that it's easier to find a online match on 360. I would take a heavy look at the exclusives as the deciding factor really, it all comes down to which games you want to play.
Konstanov
Do you want to play Halo, Mass Effect, Gears of War, Crackdown, Fable, Forza, Alan Wake, Splinter Cell, Mechwarrior, Left 4 Dead, or would you prefer the stylings of Gran Turismo, MAG, Metal Gear Solid, Uncharted, Killzone, God of War, The Last Guardian, and Resistance? You should buy into a console for the games you want to play.

Live has a much better party system integrated into it so playing together is a lot easier than on PSN. Do your real life friends all have a 360? If so then maybe you should get one too and get online with them and you'll have a blast. I wouldn't let failure rates affect your decision, not as this stage when each console has had various revisions and are now a lot more reliable than in the beginning. Skulltrail
imo, your con on the xbox 360's noise is really irrelevant. You will be turning up your sound system to enjoy your games. So you won't hear it anyway. To add, downloading the games onto the hard drive allows for faster game loads and almost no noise from the CD Tray (the main source of noise). I like the Xbox 360 not because it was the cheaper choice at the time, but all of my friends have one so I can easily enjoy games while playing with them on Xbox Live. XBL is $50 and I think it's worth it. In today's society, what a lot of people pay for is usually a really good service and XBL IS in fact a good service. Achievements are great and original. Trophies just aren't the same since it only numbers the number of achievements you've gotten rather than the value of the achievements you've gotten. Xbox 360 games are much better IMO. PS3 has some good games but most aren't what I look for in a game. Games like Infamous and Uncharted just aren't for me. What I've told everyone who debates in which console is best is that the PS3 isn't just a video game console. Sony designed it to be much more than just a game console. It's a media player (Blu-Ray movies, videos, etc), a music player, an internet browser and so much more. The Xbox 360 does in fact have a music and movie player, but doesn't put great emphasis into such features. Arcade games are pretty good as well on the Xbox 360. Not sure if the PS3 has Arcade Games, but if they don't, I'm sure Sony will try to balance the playing field by putting some on their consoles. IDK, it's ultimately your choice. I prefer the Xbox 360, regardless of its issues (so far I haven't had a problem with my Xbox 360 and most of the newer consoles have significant fixes to prevent such issues from occurring as often)

Dane
I thought about this all day long mostly while at work, and trying to figure it out. All the games I want to play, are on both systems. Not a lot of my friends have a 360 or a ps3. So most likely I'll just be playing with random people online. The price factor is still one of the major issues. The 360 is cheaper, but with live, it costs more after awhile. an HDTV also got my attention so I have to figure out if Blue ray is worth it for me. I have no idea what to do! lol. However, I am now thinking about it this way. PS 3 $299. Xbox 360 with one year of live $299. I'll have to find my old router, and find out if it works or not. The Failure rate still has me uneasy with the 360 though at its 52% rate. I want something I wont have to worry about it working.
ienhz
If you're a heavy online gamer I would go with the 360. From first hand experience, playing with people on PSN is like playing in a ghost town. Probably less than 50% of the people I play with have a mic whereas on 360 almost everyone has a mic and uses it (for better or for worse). Personally I like the human interaction even if they are random people. 360 systems are all Jasper models since 2008/2009 and those shouldn't have any problems. If you're a casual online gamer then PS3 should be fine though. Blu-Ray could be a difference maker as well. I don't think I'm ever going to buy another DVD. I found two tvs that get my attention. I have to call my cable company and ask what they charge each month for HD. So what are the chances of a NEW 360 having any issues? Online gaming, then i would say 360, it's superior in online - you get what you pay for (DLC exclusives, cross game party chat, constant updates, Netflix, facebook, last.fm, game with fame/devs, and major updates it seems twice a year) both the 360 and ps3 have GREAT arcade/downloadable games. The jasper seems to have a pretty low fail rate, most of the failures you hear about are prob still from pre-jasper consoles. Plus they fix RROD for free, so i wouldn't take failure rate into your consideration.

ZakO
If you're bothered by noise (and buying a 360) make sure you get one with a decent sized HDD so you can copy the games to it which will significantly reduce the noise. I completely disagree with noise being "irrelevant", if you're playing games from a disc the 360 is ridiculously loud, I definitely notice it whilst playing a game (from the HDD it's nice and quiet though). Didn't they get rid of the pro version and mark the elite down to it's price? If so, then it should be coming with a 120 gig HDD then; you won't run out of room fast on that.
