MBP Supoerdrive Refuses to Burn DVDs/CDs

Recommended Posts

My 2 year old MBP's SuperDrive is starting to play up.

It has no problem reading DVDs/CDs but it has severe problems burning.

No matter what sort of DVDs I use, it could be DVD+R. DVD-R, or DVD DLs, it can be any brand either. It always provides me with a Medium Error.

The same with CDs.

I could be burning a CD in iTunes or burning Movies/Data to a DVD using Toast or Finder's Burn Function.

Now I have searched Google and lots of topic's come up like this one, and there is a mix response, some people fix the problem by using a Lens Cleaner CD, others SuperDrives just work again some how and others have had to take it in and get the SuperDrive replaced.

I don't have AppleCare so will have to pay to get this fixed if I take into an Apple Store.

So I am going to try the Lens Cleaner CD, if that doesn't work I'm going to have to do one of two things.

1. Take it to the Local Apple store (30 mins away) and get them to fit a new SuperDrive.

2. Purchase a USB SuperDrive (MacBook Air) for ?42 from CEX.

I am not sure how much the Apple Store will charge to fit a SuperDrive, if anyone knows, please let me know as I will need to weight up the two options.

Anyone else resolved this problem any other way either?!

Many Thanks

EDIT: MODS can you please you edit the title, as I have no idea what a Supoerdrive is!

I have the same issue...mine is 2 years old too (Santa Rosa), in fact, mine spits them out after trying to read any discs. Occasionally they'll work but for the most part they won't. I've also heard that lens cleaner might work. I don't use the CD drive 95% of the times so I haven't bothered to try out a lens cleaner but do try and let us know if it worked out for you.

When I asked for replacement at Apple store they said it would be about $400~$500 CDN (~?260 though it can vary for you). I don't know how much regular external DVD writers are but you might find cheaper alternatives than ?42 Macbook Air one. Sorry I can't be of more help:/:/
