Time Machine backup drive

Recommended Posts

This is the second drive that I have been using for Time Machine that has done this. The disk has just unmounted and now due to a verification error I cannot mount it anymore. Is this a problem with Time Machine or possibly the drive? This has happened to 4 other WD drives aside from this one (not time machine backups though) and one Lacie external which was the first to have this happen and be in use with Time Machine. Any help is appreciated.

PS: Disk Utility can see the drive still. All the other drives that failed previously were no longer recognized by Disk Utility, and only the Lacie was readable by Windows.

What are some of the consistent factors in this problem? Obviously the computer is one. Are you using the same USB port or USB cable, maybe a USB hub? If you daisy-chain too many devices, it can cause your USB bus to freak out depending on the amperage in use at the time.

It seems like the drive is disconnecting at a bad time, causing the drive to corrupt. I've had my WD MyBook do this before (luckily, it just needed a repartitioning to work again), and I found out that it was because it was connected to a Belkin USB hub. As soon as I connected it to the back of my 23" LED Cinema Display, the random disconnects stopped happening and it's all happy now.

Just checked and while I do have a Belkin USB adapter, the drive was not connected through it. It is directly connected via USB to my MBP
