Rare: "We're Long Past the Stage" where Goldeneye Deal is Fea

Recommended Posts

The long, sad tale of bringing the groundbreaking shooter Goldeneye to Nintendo's Virtual Console, or Xbox Live Arcade, appears to have ended long ago, with a whimper.

Addressing a reader question about Goldeneye ever getting an agreement between Nintendo and Microsoft, releasing it to current generation consoles, Rare said, alas, no.

That was some time ago, my friend. Fate was against us that day. Destiny conspired to raise the hurdles even as we attempted to clear them, resulting in unpleasant groinal injury. I suspect we're long past the stage where an agreement was on the cards, but you never know. Stranger things have happened? somewhere ? probably.

Dead is how we'd characterize it for now. It's a shame. It'd be a no-brainer moneymaker, but because Nintendo and Microsoft can't figure out who gets paid first, or the most, a re-release of Goldeneye is not meant to be. Not many things were.

While the game was no doubt amazing back in the day. I do wonder how much fun the game would be now? The controls were rather clunky back then, I would bet they would be even worse now.

A great game for it's time but not sure bringing it back would be the smartest move.

+1 it's cool for 'nostalgia' but in today's market??...

Well I'd get it as I'm sure they could clean up the controls a bit to take advantage of dual analogue sticks.

That said, I'm not gutted either. The game is one that has aged and part of me thinks something like Live multiplayer would completely butcher the memories people have of playing that game with friends and generally it'd probably fail as a multiplayer title. Unblanaced maps and guns ect...made for fun back in the 90's when you could screen cheat but I dunno how well it'd fare now without a fairly big update to the multiplayer component.

So yeah, I'd grab it for the single player but I won't cry too afoul if it's not going to be ported. Still, I find it weird that Nin and MS couldnt come to an agreement where the title was made available on both the Wii and the XBox, ensuring both would make money from it most likely.

n64 owners have something to brag about now, i guess...

and yeah, goldeneye was always about split screen multiplayer... it just wouldnt be the same without the guy your playing against sitting on the couch with you...

too bad, was hoping to get it, having never been a Nintendo owner. My friends used to rave about it back in the day and it wasn'tbad from the little i played of it. Something tells me Nintendo were the spoilers here, they have this thing with working with other companies, their corporate DNA goes nuts when a major company tries to work with them. to wit Crazy Ken and his eventual Playstation...

I'm sure they have. It's a licensing nightmare. The Bond license has been through half a dozen hands since then.

When Rare brings over their other games, they own the Banjo IP etc, and they're building an engine on 360 to recreate that experience with their old assets, they're not emulating Nintendo's hardware.

Bond is an unholy union of license and platform holders. MGS, Activision, Nintendo.

If you consider 1up a credible source (...) then they indicated that Nintendo blocked it because their cut wasn't enough:

:( Why... I wish they would go into more detail as to why there will never be Goldeneye on XBLA :(

Microsoft don't have the rights. Someone is stopping it. Activision have the James Bond rights. Nintendo must have some say. Rumours it was going to be released for 360 and Wii to get Nintendo on board. Who knows.

I know it's a right issue with everything, but that doesn't explain exactly where the issue lies.

Is it money, is it copyright issues, is it somebody (nintendo) wanting 100% of the profits, etc etc..

No serious, this news has no effect on my opinion, I've always thought it sucked ever since I played it on my friend's N64 back in the day.

The only fun I had with it was when we played split screen MP.

Go back and play it now and its aged very badly.

I'm sure if you seen more of your contact list playing Goldeneye on XBLA, you would too :p

I think its because microsoft owns rare, another company has the james bond rights, and nintendo i think owns the code to the game or the n64 parts of the game. There is no arcade version of the game.

Its not feasable to recode the game from scratch and there is no way nintendo would let a remade version of the game come out to the 360 while the wii gets stuck with the original.

The rights are spread between too many companies.

I don't blame nintendo either. Remember nintendo put up all the cash for the game to be made so nintendo deserves something out of any deal made anyway.

I still have my N64 and play it occasionally. Hasn't aged any worse than the original Halo ;)
