Auto-closing very old threads

Recommended Posts

Considering that thread revivals are looked down upon so much around here, why hasn't there ever been (at least that I'm aware of) an effort to close threads that haven't had any activity for, lets say, 3 months or more? Surely this could easily be accomplished by a script or maybe it is even an feature of the board software.

lets say, 3 months or more?

I second this, but I believe it should be 12 or 18 Months

Many forums leave old threads open (waiting for the next reply)

I've always believed it was like that to entice users to join up and reply on these searched results

But when they do, members tend to reply back, this thread is very old, go create a new thread !

Kinda strange :/

Think it should be like "Last post was a year ago" sorta thing. Closing threads which were open for a few years and still are active (like the WoW thread) would be kinda "meh". I'm all for this (Y).

I don't believe there is an issue if a legit question is asked/posted from an old thread.

The only time there is an issue is when a person spams/contributes nothing to the topic just for the sake of bumping or when another member gets bent out of shape when a perfectly fine question is asked from an old thread.

I don't think so because I'm in the Media Room a lot, and there's things such as Movie Ratings / Reviews which can/should be revived to put in your input, instead of creating multiple movie threads.

This is a silly idea. I ressurected an old thread, and this is a really good example, asking if anyone had the wallpaper pack Aerostream by ve1n. Apparently ve1n's DA page is dead so it was difficult to get my hands on the pack, but by posting in that thread I was able to get it from another user .

Sure, I could've just made a new thread but that felt unnessesary.

I think people should care less about bumps tbh. Just saying "why did you bump this? seriously gtfo" is the same as saying "reported!". (You're not suppost to announce that you've gone and reported something, btw.)

I'm not sure which forum software it is, but it simply disables quick reply on old threads to prevent people from accidentally replying to something thats ancient. Perhaps something along those lines?

Maybe something more like a warning before the post is made.

Is there even a rule for this though? If anything, they shouldn't be ABLE to reply. They shouldn't be punished for it.

All anybody ever grumpily says is "USE SEARCH FEATURE NEXT TIME". Well, sometimes a new person does that and get an old thread without realizing!

By warning he meant a message like "This thread is very old, reply anyway?".

Well I think there should be a poll on the threads- when It reaches a certain amount of Close thread Votes- The thread should close or a time out would work.

However having said that- Sometimes old threads are updated with newer information. Not to mention I have seen that some threads resurface as user have problems with their systems. These problems are where the user has questions or has tried the fix and it didn't work. An example for this I have seen , most recent within this year was a post about Vista and Aero not being able to be enabled. To which the person tried the fixes from the old post and it didn't work and people responded back to eventually fix the guy's problem. Instead of him creating a new thread. That would be the only drawback to the auto-close.

Though the warning idea would be a good idea- Before your post is made where it lets you know that this topic is a year old.

Another option I just thought of- is that after a lets say year a post tittle will change Font Color. To show the user that this is an old post.

Oh, that makes sense! I thought he meant a warning through the IPB system.
