My how they grow fast, don't they? Originally, Microsoft said that Xbox Live Arcade titles should be 50 megabytes or less. Today they've bulged well past the 1 GB barrier. Microsoft has confirmed that 2 gigs is the new max.

At Tokyo Game Show, IGN brought up the ballooning size of XBLA games in an interview with Microsoft's director of digital games, Scott Austin. Austin acknowledged 2 gigabytes is the new maximum, but not through any edict from Microsoft; it's because of a technical limitation of the system serving those games.

Games on Demand, which sells full versions of classic titles, uses different architecture and has no such restrictions, Austin said. So, now you know.

Systems formatted to FAT32 can't store files larger than 2GB.

Wrong. FAT32 supports upto 4GB for a single file.

Sucks for DICE who just went through a ton of effort making sure the game was only 50 mb. At least now they can add more maps.

If you are referring to Battlefield 1943, that game was over 500mb. The 50mb limit was the original set limit and that has slowly increased over the years, now hitting 2GB.

The 2GB limit is even stranger when you consider that Games-on-Demand can support full DVD games

Does seem odd ...

Then again, I think 2GB is a fair amount to offer the developers, I mean, any more than that and you are starting to blur the line between a retail game and an XBLA game.

yeah most installs seem to be around 2gigs anyways. So more and more people are used to it. I don't see a problem with it since most people have broadband anyways, and the default HD's are getting bigger.
