How to make .avis iTunes friendly?

Recommended Posts

I've got a few .avi's on my mac that I'd prefer were in iTunes, along with everything else. However, as I'm sure you know - iTunes ignores the existance of .avi's completely, so I can't import them, let alone play them.

So I could do with converting them to a format iTunes recognises; .mov or .mpeg4 for example. However, I'm having very little luck in finding an app that can help me do this.

I've tried Handbrake, and after selecting a file to convert, it says "No Valid Titles Found", ffmpegX doesn't want to play either; it seems to actually rip a copy of the file, but then I get an 'unrecognised file type' error in quicktime.

Any ideas? :(

Does that then let them work on an iPod?

If the Video and Audio are currently in a format that an Ipod can play yes, However i'm not sure ipod/iphone can use .mov files

I will do a quick test and get back

Well, the test file i made did not work, it was not synced to my ipod touch

I don't really use my iPod/iPhone for video much so i never thought about that, They will play in Frontrow/AppleTV though which is how I use them

So a re-encode to .mp4 or .m4v looks like the best way to make "Portable" files
