360 Locks up and Distorts screen

Recommended Posts

Recently I have been having this issue where my box will randomly lock up but make this hissing sound (through the speakers) then the screen will look like pics attached.

I tried without the HDD but still does it.. box starting to belly up?

It happens, in game, or at menu, even in Media Center.

nvm... i just three rings of death...

Just last week mine got what your receiving in the first picture and would free shortly thereafter. If you are out of warranty, wait until it RROD's and send it to MS.

Edit: Never mind, sounds like I'm a minute too late. Sorry to hear it, having a console break blows.

It says that it's out of STANDARD WARRANTY but the RROD is covered I guess, no charge was added to me.. I'll send the damn thing in.

Now is there a good chance I will get a new box with HDMI? Just curious.

my Elite is out of warranty and recently does this all the time - no RROD thankfully but still makes it unplayable....whats the fix? or is there?

Sorry to hear about the RROD, mine did that a month ago and had to get a new box.

On a funnier note "savvy bunny" is a cool GT lol.

@presence06: Hopefully just cross your fingers. You should get a newer system. They are trying to send out a lot of late falcon / early jaspers they got back as RETURNS because of broken faceplates or etc. Now they are using those to send out in return for RROD boxes.

Be thankful that youll get it back before MW2, AC2 and L4D2. I dont know if any of those are in your list, but all major releases with MW2 being the biggest this year.

@enroh: Your elite was probably made at the earliest in 07 and if so, your still covered in 3 year RROL(RROD) or E74.

So dont worry. Let it red ring, hopefully before any games that you really want and send it in.

Question for anyone who's gotten a RROD. How old is your 360?

Is your 360 one of the originals (xenon)? You get it in mid-2007 (zephyr)? In 2008 (falcon)? Or after 2008 (jasper)? Or if you know it by chip :p.

@Enroh: well sir, dont take this to heart because I would of done the same thing, but you ****ed up lol.

@Splur: Im running on my "totally redone" xenon. This thing is manufactured in jan of 06. Its OLD. I got it cheap and it was my first xbox last year. I was very happy. It preceded to red ring AFTER i spent a week custom painting it and the whole 9.

Well after having a long but helping talking with the rep(out of country of course, speaking my language didnt help either, its "against" microsoft policy...) she told me to leave a strong note in there letting the tech know that if he needs anything call me, and explain the situation or anything.

So I left basically a 1 page essay on how I basically got it as a birthday present(i did, just bought hd, and controller to match) and I got my xbox back with a note, i was suprised. The tech had redone my whole xbox with falcon motherboard and etc, just no HDMI because its technically "hidden" behind my old case. I couldnt believe it. He said the xbox is brand new, I can try turning it on with the controller, plug in the hd and what not. But its definitely a new motherboard. I believed him AFTER i plugged it in. He had redone everything.

Fans, motherboard everything. Even a quieter dvd drive. I was happy because my custom paint job stayed and my xbox is still going. A lot of people look at it and go "thats cool and its one of the originals" and then im like "em yeah about that" haha.

The thing is thou, before me the owner played it heavily too. He was only selling it because he got an arcade so it was quieter, So for owning it since Feb 06, till october 08 not bad. Most people lost there originals within the first month let alone that year. It red ringed after i put a weeks worth of play into it too so I was surprised but hey, got a new one out of it with my old case.

No I didn't **** up - the console did. After 2 or so years of heavy playing I am surprised it lasted this long. too bad I thought this was actually a help thread not a "let it die a horrible death and call someone else to deal with it" thread.

Kinda like someone in here asking "my engine keeps stalling and I dont know why" - "thats ok sir, keep driving til you get an engine light on your dash and then call the dealer"

:(

Sadly I found my answer OUTSIDE of Neowin for once.

According to Wikipedia, mine is a Falcon, about 18 months old. Started to lock up and subsequently red ringed last week, collected by UPS on Monday and apparently it's being shipped back to me today. :D
