Everquest 2

I used to then I had a station account for playing it SWG and Vanguard, but since I only ever played vanguard, since it had all the good from EQ2+all the good from sWG. I sort of reverted to just Vanguard.

Now I don't really have time for MMORPGs at the moment though. but EQII and Vanugard are the ones I miss, EQ2 has some excellent scenery, and vanguard as well, but it also had the huge world, the huge sea port, actual ships and even dynamic actual weather that moved across the gameworld.

I still play it, and still think it's the best MMO out there personally. Though LotRO comes a close 2nd.

The game simply cannot be beat for content as there is just SO much content in the game. If you like PvE, EQ2 is about as good as it gets :D

Content wise EQ2 is pretty awesome, at least compared to the superpopular one, who releaes paid expansions that are a mere fraction of the free expansions EQ2 do :)

but have you tried Vanguard? or rather have you tried vanguard after SoE took aover and fixed it up (wow that sounds weird to say after NGE :p)

I haven't played it for a while now but I did enjoy it. I found the player base to be much better then wow, which these days seems to be full of immature foul mouthed little kids. Now that you've reminded me I may install it again, or maybe try out Vanguard.

Doesn't vanguard have a TON of bugs or what not? Coulda sworn i read that. Never gave EQ2 a try, if they have a free trial i might try it out. Are they ever planning on a EQ3?

Nah, Vanguard was buggy at release, but even so I wouldn't call it radically more buggy than any other launch mmorpg. but the scope of Vanugard is pretty much beyond any other MMORPG so in pure numbers it would have more bugs

As for EQ3, I do believe there have been reports that they are working on it behind the scenes.

Personally I find vanguard to be EQ3, despite being in a different universe.

What's huge in scope about Vanguard? Just looked at IGN's description and read a few reviews, seems like a pretty average MMO, one reader review said

May 11, 2009 - Where do I start? Convoluted menus that fill the screen up, ok graphics, still buggy. Oh yeah they may have a slew of races and classes but with 4 faces to choose from and 4 hairstyles for each expect to see a lot of similar people well that is if a lot of people were playing. Note that is 4 hairstyles after they added more. please do yourself a favor any avoid this convoluted mess.

Well it's got the largest playable land of any MMORPG.

and you can customize the faces, unliek most MORPGs, and any race can pretty much be any class ( I think there's one or two limitations), the character customization was reduced about a year or year and half ago due to the extreme resource usage required by the original skeletal structure.

The classes themselves are quite "big". playing a necromancer in Vanguard is pretty damn awesome, walking around with an army of undead :)

Then there's the trade and construction system, to make a ship for example, requires several different typed of crafters, to make the different parts and one to put it all together.

Player cities with castles (quite inspired from SWG, but with more resonable limits to stop the unlimited uninhabited cities).

Huge oceans you can travel on with your ships, underwater quests. and they where working on ship to ship combat, and sea monsters.

The scale of the in game cities, like the aforementioned port city. sailing past the guardians to the port is awe inspiring.

Awesome mounts, and you can get a mount at a reasonable level 20, not effing 60. granted the game world is large enough to require it. They have added a few fast travel methods since launch though.

pretty much both SWG and EQ2 where much "larger" games than any other MMORPG out there, the Vanguard pretty much combines the scale of both of them into one huge one.

Unfortunately we may never again see an MMORPG like this, they cost to much to develop they are so huge that debugging requires a much larger team than any other MMORPG. hence they also cost to much to maintain. and with the risk of developing an MMORPG, since they take such a large team and time to develop, like Vanguard it runs a high risk of not making money from the initial box sales alone and will require months of subscriptions alone just to pay for the initial development. Hence why SoE could pick up a ready made MMORPG for practically free.

And graphically it's in a league of it's own, except for NCSoft games which use about 5 different armor models throughout the whole across all classes, freeing up a lot of resources to prettify everything.

and most importantly, most of the people playign Vanguard are adults. And you can fly pretty much anywhere, the only restrictions are over quest areas, like some of the huge open world quest fortresses, so you don't just drop straight into the boss for awesome loot :p

Anyway, don't bother with the reviews, most of them are outdated from the launch anyway, Grab the trial and try it out.

You make it sound so appealing haha, i think i will give it a try after i try EQ2, i hate when great games die; makes me wish i was a billionaire so i could buy the rights to the game myself and fund it!

In fact I just downloaded the installer for the full game, They have a small trial (isle of Dawn) for trial members.

And I think I'll resubscribe, though I'm unsure if I may subscribe for the whole Station Access and also check out my old EQ2 characters, and pop into SWG to check out my 80 bounty hunter(the only MMO I've ever maxed a character in, though with the NGE they upped the level to 90), and see if the game has gotten itneresting again. I mean it is Star Wars, it does have great graphics, and the NGE while not as good as the CU2, is still a decent syste, thogh I dislie the offset over the shoulder cam. but it does have the Space expansion, which is practically a modern XWing vs tie fighter. There's a lot of game inlcuded in the Station access, even though they increased the price way back.. maybe they reduced it again...

I kinda wish SoE owned more MMORPG games that could be included in station access. Then maybe I would have bothered with WoW on the odd weekend as well.

I'm downloading Vanguard instead, and i noticed that station pass thing; but the lineup seems kinda weak. I would only play EQ2 and Vanguard at the most, since SWG would be futile to play seeing as it's pretty much impossible it will survive after Bioware releases their MMO.

Edit: Well thats great, first attempt to run it on Windows 7 and it encounters a error.

I'm a sucker and just signed up for station account, even though, I'll probably only use it for VG with the occasional drift into EQ2 and possibly SWG, but station access also gives access to some bonus content "free" so...

guess I'll be necromancing again tomorrow, unless I decide to kick as swith my cleric, she's a lot easier to play and kicks ass, and she's better on the eyes (one of the only female characters I made after a guildie said the wise words "would you rather look at a guy or a girl all the time when you play", and I ended up really liking the class and leveling far enough that I didn't wanna reroll :)

Anyway, the game shoudl play fine in Vista and 7, but I can't really say right now, since I got about ~8 hours left to download the game(probably not gonna be anywhere near that, but I'm going to bed anyway).

Make sure you don't install to the same directory as you put the installer though, I did that mistake, and it fails to overwrite the station client downloader exe with the identically names station client :p

Yes I've played Vanguard quite a few times, both before it was cleaned up, and after. And it's a seriously, SERIOUSLY underrated game right now. I wouldn't say it's as good as EQ2 or LotRO or anything. But it's a damn fine game. Terrific PvE content, and a TON of stuff to explore. As mentioned it's just a huge game landmass wise. I mean, utterly huge. I never tried any PvP, but I'm sure it's halfway decent at minimum.

Either way, I always say Vanguard as the spiritual successor to EQ1 and 2 more or less, maybe not EQ3, but close enough. It also has a ton of content like EQ2. But it's a ghost town most of the time when you play it, sadly. Still, the free trial area is rather large (and so is the download for it lol) so if you've never tried Vanguard, I'd recommend it to you guys along with EQ2 and LotRO.

Ok I love PVE content and am right now working towards getting my hunter to 80 in wow after not playing for awhile. I have tried EQ2 and Vanguard before but get stuck with that "well Im so far behind how can I ever catch up problem" Is it possible to say start EQ2 and in a reasonable amount of time(1-2 months) be doing the great pve content? And will I be pretty much by myself untill max level?

EQ2 is quite good there since they have the Mentor thing. Dunno if it's been implemented in VG yet, they where talking about it, or rather the players where and the devs did tend to listen to the players in VG.

you'll need to find a guild willing to help you up though. though personally, I find the journey to be the game, not the end game, I never have a rush to max my character, though I do tend to get annoyed when the dings between levels get ridiculouly far between :)

Theres a few things about EQ that WoW should borrow:

Zones - I like how EQ did the zones and instances. Sure you face loading screens but the zones are so massive and detailed that you can actually get lost in them. Every instance in EQ is like the BRD of WoW.

AA - I like the AA system even though all it does is replace one grind with another at the level cap.

Graphics - Even with EQ turning 5 the graphics are still very good

The Quest Journal - I never liked the questlog in Wow and hate it even more when it went into 2 panes. I thought EQ did it well, plus you can hold TONS of quests.

Draggable Windows - I wish WoW would let you drag window elements around like the guild window, character sheet, etc.

Some things I dont like about EQ....

Soloing takes ages, while EQ 2 wont force you to group you'll spend ages hitting 80 just questing.

Microtransactions - EQ has alot in terms of micro transactions. Not a fan that you can buy in game items for real money.

Tooltips - The lack of tooltips in this game is frustrating

Since when could you buy in game items for real money ?

are you talking about that exchange thing they where going to implement way back ? that's not even across all servers only on the exchange servers. and they're items you can quest for anyway. It's just a legal way to earn money and get rid of some of the gold sellers and farmers at the same time. you also can't move characters back from an exchange server.

and damn. the VG download was practically done when I went to work. so I decided to start the EQ2 installer as well, now for some reason the VG download isn't "that" almost done anymore. I suspect it's finished and decided to pick up some expansions and stuff :) Game dir is over 18 gig of downloaded stuff already though (dam I forgot how utterly huge this game actually was)

Talking about station cash where you can buy house items and xp pots. The card game will also grant access to a special zone with a special card next patch.

The Vanguard download (if you are talking about the trial area) finished so fast because it's only about 2 gigs. The entire game is like 18 gigs I think if I remember correctly?

I'm pretty sure they're part of the Exchange servers as well.

but then it's a long time since I played EQ2 and they just introduced the exchange servers when I started playing VG. instead

Heh yeah, its' a biggie to download the entire game. I think AoC was bigger though (24 or so gigs if I remember correctly).

:D

hmm yeah, I got AOC installed, but will probably remove it, while I love the lore and like the combat system. I just like VG and EQ2 more.

and in these games I won't be raped by teens with 4 hands in PvP who managed to spam spells attacks and all that while hitting all the 4 WASD keys at the same time and rotate their character with the mouse.... getting beaten by twinked characters half my level gets boring fast :p
