Risen - RPG from Gothic Devs

Recommended Posts

Anyone playing/tried this?

It's awesome, it's a great mix of Gothic 1/2, whilst skimming past that trainwreck Gothic 3 was.

Developed by Piranha Bytes.

The game itself is pretty damn good looking, at least the lighting engine is awesome :)

ps. Do NOT play the Xbox 360 version, it was outsourced to other devs for a port and is a complete piece of mess. See below

Woah dear lord at the 360 version, what are review sites saying about this? Only spotted this due to steam.

PC - 79

Xbox 360 - 54

It's the usual scenario from a PD game though, some rough combat and niggles in the game play, but a long lush story with great environments and exploration.

More PC/360

I played the demo the other day, it seemed pretty cool... I've never played any of the Gothic games though... so I'm not positive I would like it. Can anyone relate it to any other games? It felt almost like The Witcher, just not as "deep" ... is that at all close?

I liked it, but I got my roommate to play it for a while and he got stuck in a tree, literally, we had to exit the game. Now he won't even consider playing it.

It is quite like The Witcher, but far less linear.

You can literally go anywhere in this game, it doesn't hold your hand, if you come across foes too powerful for you they'll just beat your ass.

That however is the big plus for it, you're rewarded for exploration.

Yeah its quite buggy in places, the combat is rubbish though and its rather unpolished.

I ended up uninstalling it and selling it to a mate.

One time i walked out of a doorway and the game just launched my character into the sky and i got stuck in the skybox, and ive killed an enemy and he floated up and got stuck in the ceiling. Quests are buggy as well, if you choose thieving skills you can complete objectives for quests you dont even have in your quest book and it gives you the experience for it by picking items from NPC pockets that you need for quests.

I wouldnt recommend anyone buy it, its a rental title definately, but not a purchase.

I'm on Chapter 4 and I've not encountered any bugs like that.

If you pickpocket or steal something quest related it will give you exp for finding the item but you still need to complete the quest by finding out what it's related to/giving the item to whoever wants it.

I guess it's one for the Gothic crowd and those who can put up with some of it's quirks, but it's the best PC RPG I've played in ages. Played it non-stop the last few days.

Been playing it non-stop (except for work) as well. Haven't notice any of the bugs he mentioned either, a couple of clipping issues but nothing major. The game and scope is good enough to put up with it's quirks!

Can't believe how crap the xbox version looks though. I haven't got a high-end system but can run the game with settings on max.

I hadn't touched an RPG until Fallout 3, but that tempted me to get Oblivion for my PS3, which I am thoroughly enjoying (played it for an hour every night since I got it a few months ago). If I like Oblivion am I likely to like this too? Noticed it on Steam a few times and am tempted.

Audioboxer - You should try Gothic 3 with all the community patches installed. It's a lot better, the serious bugs have been obliterated and the gameplay overhauled.

i gotta say this game is Fun. a friend and i are trying it and its been a blast. The inventory system feels a bit wierd(i feel like it auto arranges my bags every time i loot). is there any way to turn on AA for this game, cause it runs crazy smooth and the fonts seem a bit unclear and the jagged edges but me a bit

Just barely got to chapter two, so far the game has been brilliant. Decided play first as a mage, before going to monastery I explored fair chunk of the island hoarding LPs so as soon as I "graduated" as a mage I got to bump magic bullets to 10. Magic bullets are really nice but eat mana like hell, I guess I'll be spending some more time roaming the island hunting for berries and hero's crowns. Also need to find a lot more tablets and books to get wisdom to 150.

Despite what I've heard about the combat, I really want to give this a shot, and was really tempted to pick it up on Steam on my lunch hour.. but I think I am going to get the demo first. I heard some one compare it to The Witcher, I love that game! Definatly looks like something that could tie me up until Dragon Age comes out next month!

Just finished playing the demo. I like it very much. It is similar to the Witcher.

The only way it is similar to the witcher is that they are both RPG's. Risen on 360 sucks. Risen on PC sucks slightly less.

Combat is absolutely terrible. The plot could be great but is so poorly executed its a shame, the game world, while being good looking on the PC version is annoying to travel and just like Gothic it has quite a few bugs that make it not worth playing.

After playing the PC version for 6 or so hours and seeing it wasn't getting any better I decided to edit my stats to ridiculous levels so I could run around and have some fun...even that was unsatisfying due to the horrible combat mechanics.
