Microsoft announced during its Open House event today in NYC that a public Beta for Facebook, Twitter and Last.FM integration on XBL will launch later in the month.

Jennifer Puzio-Brookes, entertainment manager for Xbox, revealed the update during a behind-closed-doors session, stating the Beta will land during the ?middle-towards-the-end of October.?

Invites to certain members of XBL will be handed out along with early access to the new features for members of the press.

I think, if anything, Facebook needs more testing and more work to get right than twitter, which in the end is just a simple little app that posts little blurps to a website.

So here is my question. Is Facebook support just going to be, viewing our pages/comments/pics, etc? OR will we be able to play Mafia Wars and the like using our xbox's ?

Probably gonna be limited to the same features the iPhone app has access to... although it might not even be that extensive, considering it's the first release.

I'm in no rush for it though.

It's only fair that those of us who pay for service get to try stuff out early.

Hmmm not just early, those features will be XBL gold only

In-game music w/ last fm.

So you can listen to music while you game w/ your music!

I haven't read in detail about any of this.

Microsoft announced that Facebook and Twitter integration would be coming to Xbox Live way back at E3 in June, but we've yet to get a specific date for when to expect it. And, well, we still don't have one for North America -- but we do for the U.K.! The official U.K. Xbox site now lists the update for November 17 (via Joystiq).

The closest thing we've gotten to a release date for this update in North America was when Microsoft recently told MTV Multiplayer that a public beta would be begin "middle-towards-end of October." So if the full service launches November 17 here as well (or thereabouts), that would make for a public beta of about one month. That sounds about right, we suppose, but we'll just have to wait and see what Microsoft actually has planned.

But now we come to the hard question: Does anyone really care that much about accessing Facebook and Twitter on their Xbox 360?
