Calling PS3 and 360 owners

Recommended Posts

Is it possible on either console to play video/music/photos from a portable HDD attached to the ps3/360 via USB? I don't own either but am in the market to buy one and I'm just trying to learn about each's media functionality.

Excellent! Thanks for the quick replies. I am trying to pair a new console with a new HDTV purchase but am weighing all the possibilities.

I have a feeling this thread is about to get ugly...

The PS3 is above the 360 when it comes to A/V stuff.

and there it is....

Having used both recently I would admit that I do prefer PS3 for A/V added with the fact you will be getting the blu-ray playback with the PS3. If you are more focused on video than games then I would certainly say it's a simple decision to go with the PS3.

If gaming is a bigger factor then you need to look at what exclusive games you wish to be playing on both consoles.

Well Said

Its all about what you want and what you like.

We have 360 fanboys and PS3 fanboys, I love both (not got my PS3 yet but play it loads at my friend)

Look at what is going to be your long term usage, gaming?, community chat?, or Streaming.

I dont have Windows MC, so I find I have to convert alot of my stuff so i can watch it back on my 360, but I do have my old xbox for that and it does a cracking job as I have XBMC.

Both have there advantages and disadvantages!

Have you tried using either TVersity or PS3MediaServer (works fine for 360) ?

I have both a 360 and a PS3. I consider the former to have the superior game range, and the latter to have the best media support.

PS3MediaServer is amazing.

Yes I also feel that the titles on the 360 are generally stronger fueled by the 360s greater popularity but the advantage for me comes from saving money from the built in wifi and blu-ray and the games aren't a slouch either. I am comfortable connecting my portable HDD to the console to view my files, as I have them backed up there, but that ps3mediaserver looks jaw-dropping. It's a tough decision.

Yep, well said.

The PS3 is the superior media console out of the two. I mean first off Blu Ray, but then just with streaming media, it is definitely the one I use at home. I have even purchased software for the 360 for OS X, Connect360, which is actually really good stuff and works well, and I have set up Windows Media as well on the 360, but nothing beats the free PS3 Media Server software, which actually works with the 360, but works just much, much better on the ps3.

As an indication of what you can do with PS3MS on the PS3 not too sure if the 360 supports the thumbnails yet. But coupled with Boz's thumbnail web application you can create a nice looking library. :) (Y)

That is pretty sweet. I wish the 360 had a way of doing something better with the library. All we get now is a screenshot of the video 10 seconds (or so) in, which usually means a logo of the movie company... I always thought it would be cool also if when you put a DVD movie in the drive that it would download the information for it and display something nicer than just an image of a CD. Anyways, my 360 plays everything I need it to but what pushes me over the top is Netflix on the 360. I looove my on demand Netflix.

Win7 MCE = pure win for thumbnails (although I haven't bothered to create my own :p)

Yeah, I've done that and also not spent the time to do the thumbnails. I have all my files in one folder, instead of creating separate folders for each movie. Also, MCE takes too long to boot and connect.

Sadly it's not automated but a manual process, 324 in my case. Boz has created a website that will download covers from Amazon and then create the thumbnails from. You then tell PS3MS where they are all stored, I have a seperate folder called Covers on my drive. There are various templates you can choose from too, HD-DVD, Blu-Ray and DVD I have to say it's a very slick site (Y)

I believe that Boz did mention that in a future revision of it, it will look through your directory and create them for you.

The PSM3 IMDB plugin automatically pulls covers off of IMDB depending on file name, so I guess it's possible for Boz to make it automated.

Issue is some Amazon covers are wrong/not good quality/not proportioned well.

I'd always end up doing it all myself :p
