Draken
The game is out, someone tried it already? it is any good?
DirtyLarry Veteran Posted October 7, 2009 Veteran Share Posted October 7, 2009 Okay, I cannot believe I am typing this, but the game is not that bad at all. I have to stress, it is by no means a great game, but it definitely is not a bad game. In fact, I think it is a tad better than the past Silent Hill that came out. It without a doubt borrows heavily from Silent Hill itself, which is not a bad thing by any means. The more I think about it the more I think it is definitely better than the last Silent Hill, Homecoming was it? The atmosphere is really pretty damn creepy, and that is one thing I am being most pleasantly surprised by, the games itself does a pretty good job of making you pretty tense while playing. Even casual fans of the movies, which although I have seen them all I consider myself one as I could not tell you the difference from one to the next, will see a lot of references to movies past. Some of the puzzles are really incredibly easy and/or just not well executed, like literally one you have to just twirl the Left Stick in a circle fast as all hell then press a button, so the ones like this one are indeed pretty stupid, but some of the other puzzles so far have been slightly interesting I have to say, and nothing has stumped me yet, but one or two I had to stop and think for a few seconds, so they achieved what they wanted with the puzzle aspect. And finally, like every Survival Horror game it seems, unfortunately the fighting is incredibly clunky. Press a button, it takes several seconds to execute a swing (you have a fast and heavy attack, even fast is slow), so it is that clunky press the button well ahead of time combat. Luckily there is not all that much of it, at least not yet, but you only fight a few people here and there, and they are mostly others who were "trapped" by Jigsaw. They do something about an hour into the game though to make fighting a bit more interesting, but I do not want to spoil much. Graphics are just okay. Not terrible, but definitely nothing special, and one thing is there is a lot of noticeable tearing when using a light, which you have to do almost the entire game, as everything is real dark. I have just rented it, so would I say it was worthy of a purchase? I probably would say save your money. But honestly there have not been that many Survival Horror games out these days, and I expected this to be much, much worse than it actually is. I am pleasantly surprised. So someone dying for some Survival Horror, or anyone who is an hardcore fan of the movies and also likes Survival Horror games, I have to say maybe to a purchase. I really have only played an hour or two, but these are my initial impressions. Way better than I thought it would be. The game is also a good one for Achievements ######, as literally just playing and not trying at all, I already have 260 points.
DirtyLarry Veteran Posted October 7, 2009 Veteran Share Posted October 7, 2009 EDIT - I just reread what I typed and I think perhaps I gave it to glowing of a review overall. I have to state, I was really disappointed with the last Silent Hill, so keep that in mind what I say it is better than that. I think I am more surprised that it is not awful more than anything else, I had incredibly low expectations going into it.
Sethos
So basically one of those games you expect to be ****, it's a bit above that which is positive and it'll hold you over for a few hours? Gotcha.
soniqstylz
Seems to be getting mostly solid/okay reviews overall. Nothing special, but then again, neither are the movies. You go see a Saw movie, you don't expect Godfather -- you play the Saw game, shouldn't expect Half-Life.
+Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted October 7, 2009 Subscriber² Share Posted October 7, 2009 I thought this would be a pile, but after hearing some things about it being better than SH5 I might try it. I love my horror games, I can put up with dodgy combat, quirks, some minor bugs, etc, if it means good atmosphere and story. Sadly I think this will lack in story, but so did SH5. No SH game will beat 2, I've come to accept that, but SH5 was just dire. Scariest 'game' I've played so far this generation is the Tower of Latria in Demons Souls, that level is just evil. Play it on a 5.1 sound system at night, horrible. The Children of Cthulhu ringing their bells, ugghhh.
ZonoBurk
Adds nothing new to the story? Does it show Dr. Gordon? I read it was supposed to reveal what happened to him. lol
Manic9803
I'm going to test it tonight hopefuly, I am a big SAW fan so I'd hope the game doesn't let me down!
t0mbi
This game looks like one of those games we have been getting lately. Ya' know, those games? Good not great, OK not bad AKA Wet AKA Wanted Finish once and never return :p
KyleGM
As a MAJOR Saw fan, I'm finding the game very enjoyable, if not for the gameplay, for the world of Saw. It's like the Lost game for me, it was a terrible terrible game, but I enjoyed exploring the Island and feeling like I was part of it. But the Saw game is by no means bad! You get the sense of urgency the victims in the movies do when you're thrown into a room with a timer, and you have to figure everything out there and then :D Love it! MytMowse
Some of the puzzles are very annoying. Even though it's repetitive, you'll have to face puzzles that are extremely difficult with a short timer to complete. You'll get it if your patient or really good with puzzles. You also have to make sure you watch every step in the game for trip wires and glass. There is no warning if you get close to them so sometimes you're just walking and your head blows off. The enemies aren't very difficult but there is some issues with combat and the best way to kill anything is to counter them. It really isn't to bad of a game though. It's a achievement pinta type of game.

I think you just nailed it :p The only puzzle I failed at so far is the swinging blade trap with Jennings but then again I'm not really much further than that :pinch: The wires do cause you to watch where you're going a lot and have made me jump the occasional time when you just randomly explode. :( The enemies is my real main gripe with this game, or rather the combat system, it feels incredibly broken to me. But for a movie game, and one based on Saw at that, they managed to make a decent enough game out of it, like I said before I wasn't expecting it to be that great, I was just hyped that there was a Saw game, but I'm glad I can play it and enjoy it! soniqstylz
Quote from the Kotaku review: Also, Tapp is shoeless throughout the game; walking on broken glass will cause him to lose health. This is explained in one of the game's first scenes, in which a shoe-wearing enemy taunts Tapp. In fact, just about every enemy Tapp kills in the game has shoes. You know what would've made a cool puzzle? ONE THAT INVOLVES TAPP TAKING SOME DEAD GUY'S DAMN SHOES. lulz...

Ironman273
I have it working on Windows 7, although I'm disappointed by it. I'm using an Xbox controller and can't fight at all. I hit the buttons it tells me to hit but he only swings the pipe when he feels like it (it seems). Frustrating enough to quit. It's a shame because the first couple of puzzles were interesting. I would've liked to kept playing.
+jamesyfx Subscriber² Posted October 30, 2009 Subscriber² Share Posted October 30, 2009 It's not out here (UK) until sometime next month, I think. I see it on Steam, but not availability. I have a feeling it will be okay, but not addictive. Hopefully there will be a nice Demo.
