Sethos
Bungie says it has a 'six-year plan' for the Halo series, which will cumulate in all novel, anime and game canon tying together. "We do have a plan that goes out at least six years," creative director, Frank O'Conner told USA Today. "Eventually, it will become very apparent that there is a plan for the way the canon all ties together and the way the comic books and the novels all tie together." Various Halo projects are due in the coming months, spanning books ('Halo: Evolutions'), comics ('Halo: Helljumper'), anime (Halo Legends) and of course, games (Halo Reach). O'Conner describes next year's Halo Reach as "a chronological prequel but it is not a prequel in the directions the Star Wars prequels were to the (original) movies." Stating the obvious he said it'll be a first-person shooter with multiplayer component that will "cover events in and around the planet Reach." On the missing in action movie Bungie pulls the usual line ("We're being very careful to pick the right time and the right partner") and drops a hint that we may not have seen the last of the Master Chief. "I think that [Master Chief's] fate, Cortana's fate and the identity of that giant, dark planet at the ending (on the game's hardest skill level) are probably big mysteries that would be irritating if they were just cliffhangers," says O'Connor. Remysaus
One of the few cases in which I don't mind the milking of a franchise, a very big part of the Halo universe is still unexplored and could offer some interesting media. And of course Bungie is a great developer, ODST proved they still are imo.

George P Global Moderator Posted October 8, 2009 Global Moderator Share Posted October 8, 2009 Milking imo is more like what you have with something like FF, etc, where the games use the same name but don't go together story wise. If they can tie in everything into one huge canon universe that's great. It makes it just that more grand and interesting. I play games, watch movies, and read comics/books for the story in the end. coresx
Yea, Microsoft is handling Halo very well so far. Long may it continue. I hope Halo Reach has a good story. Halo 1-3 didn't cut it but I understand what Bungie had to do with the trilogy, expanding the universe and not rock the boat at the same time. Fresh start with Reach. The Teej
Hardly fair :p There's been 4 games in 9 years, which is a typical release pattern for franchises (Gears of War has had 2 games in 4 years, yet no one screams cash cow at that :p )
Tharp Daddy
So if someone makes 4 games in the same universe it's a cash cow? It's a great universe and has potential for great stories, and it also has potential for money. It's nice they are actually developing the story, and trying to develop the game play. It is in no way a cash cow; now if they released Halo Super Strikers, or Halo Party one could begin to consider it a cash cow...

dead.cell
I just wish the guys that come into the computer lab here at the college would shut the **** up about it. I mean, it's like, talking about Halo means you have to raise your voice as if you're at a concert just to talk about that awesome head shot you got. Still like Halo and all of course though, and don't mind seeing more of it. Though, I did laugh pretty hard watching the E3 idiot that came out there to talk about Halo. "HEY GAIZ... GESS WUT!! WE'RE GONNA GIVE YOU GAIZ TWO HALOS! ISN'T THAT BRAHWSOME?!1"
goji
Ill be honest, I have yet to play ODST, though so far I feel let down by how the Halo series has developed thus far. Halo 2 remains a spot of contention, of course being rushed through quickly while immersing players into Halo cannon on the fly. Halo 3 while slightly pushing the story forward felt more like a remedy to the problems of the 2nd title. In short it didn't deliver anything other than great graphics and a finer tuned engine. If there is to be another Master Chief centric game, I hope they truly learn from their mistakes (again, haven't played ODST) and provide a much more compelling single and multiplayer experience. The best example of a cash cow series is Mario. There's been at least a couple hundred Mario games throughout the past twenty or so years, yet that fat plumber git is still going strong today. spenser.d
Yup, I was about to say it's Microsoft that has the plan, not Bungie. Well Microsoft does own the IP so yeah, it's them not Bungie. The Halo Universe is excellent and any way they can flesh out more of the story is fine by me  -Spenser
+Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted October 8, 2009 Subscriber² Share Posted October 8, 2009 Damn wish Munky was here, he reacts well to Halo hatin :p I see nothing wrong with the franchise carrying on, people like it, it's marketable, it's an Xbox mascot, it makes lots of money. However I do hope Bungie delve into some new projects, I understand that's why they went independent, and I doubt in going independent they're going to remain within the shackles of Halo forever. Halo is one of very few franchises I don't mind being dragged out canonically (with Metal Gear Solid being another).

They have mentioned multiple times they have a handful of people working on a "secret project" and have been doing so for quite a while. Has been said in the podcast a bunch of times and most likely in a few interviews. It's also not halo related; anyone else wanna see a next-gen marathon? +Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted October 8, 2009 Subscriber² Share Posted October 8, 2009 (edited) They have mentioned multiple times they have a handful of people working on a "secret project" and have been doing so for quite a while. Has been said in the podcast a bunch of times and most likely in a few interviews. It's also not halo related; anyone else wanna see a next-gen marathon? No, too many FPS games, I'd rather they tried something else, maybe story/adventure related. Maybe Bungies take on a Fable type adventure or something... Or a western RPG (think Mass Effect... yeah that includes weapons/shooting, but it's hardly the main draw to ME). They have the prestige and reputation behind them to punt out something that's NOT an FPS and still potentially sell millions due to "Bungie fever" aka Bungie hype :p - Typically anything that's not an FPS, or doesn't include shooting as it's main mechanic finds it hard to hit 4/5 million + this generation. Many of us gamers have grown up, but in growing up comes less time which unfortunately for us equals less time to experiment with the overload of games we get nowadays. The new generations of gamers are all "pew pew" COD drooling teenagers :p I'd like to see Bungie exploit their reputation and release something other than an FPS which might help broaden some gamers horizons, as they'll see the Bungie name and want to buy due to Bungies history, then the disc they put in at the end of the day will hopefully be something different than another FPS experience. George P Global Moderator Posted October 9, 2009 Global Moderator Share Posted October 9, 2009 Some devs stick to what they're good at, be it FPS or RPGs, You don't see them doing any sorta crossovers. Very few of the big names do many different things, but they have laods of different teams (activision, konami, etc) Bungie is small in comparison and sticks to what it does best. Everyone knows square for it's RPGs, while it has published other stuff before, no one really cared much.
