SMELTN
My son is now 9 and he has a DSi (and previously a Lite). The DSi is obviously newer but he's had the Lite for a couple of years now and it's pretty durable. When we're out together he asks me for my iPhone to play some games and I cringe hoping this won't be the time he drops it and breaks the screen. My friend gave his 12 year old a Touch and it was broken within 3 months. Exactly the same in our house. My daughter has had a DS lite for about 2 years now, and my son is now 7 and we are going to get my daughter who is now 10 a DSi and give my son the DS lite :p. But yeah definitely go with the DSi. Talking about games, remember the DSi has internet now with the DS store, which has some free games on it already, also it has a web browser built in, so it is "almost just as good as a ipod" but to me better because the titles are all kid friendly on the DSi and the fact that it is a TON more rugged. The DSi has a music player in it, so you can listen to music with it
murkurie
I own a DSi, and a Ipod touch, the DSi is superior in game play and durability, I actually broke my DSi's top screen while in a airplane it was my fault warranty had ended and Nintendo fixed for free, ipod touch not sure if apple would do the same, the DSi also has a music player too, and alot of child stop and ask me about the camera's which they love, I find more of a gimmick. and dsi also has a internet browser don't forget that
Lee G. Veteran Posted October 9, 2009 Veteran Share Posted October 9, 2009 Yes, they do come with parental controls. I still wouldn't give an 8-year-old an internet-enabled device like the iPod Touch. As has been mentioned before the DSi wins on the durability front as well. I agree. I think Nintendo DSi is much more suitable for an 8 year-old.
Fred Derf Veteran Posted October 9, 2009 Veteran Share Posted October 9, 2009 My son is 8. There are no kids in his 4/5 class (or the other grade 4 class) with a iPod Touch. Plenty of them have DS's, DS Lite's or DSi's.
fhpuqrgrpgvirzhpujbj
I would say DSi, My 5 year old has a DS lite and loves it. My daughter used to play on my iPhone (when it was alive) and she got bored with that quicker than the DS. I read that as "My daughter used to play on my iPhone (when she was alive) " Anyway, I'd say DSi
aussiefloyd_fan
iPod Touch, it's capable of so much more than a gaming (internet, music, apps) and you don't have to worry about keeping up with cartidges. and get a dlo GAME grip its a rubber case that fits over the back and makes it wasier to hold.. and if you drop it it bounces and falls rather than SPL... 2xSilverKnight
i don't know why you even considered giving an Ipod touch to a 8 yr old kid. I don't even have one and i'm 22. DSi would be good thought.
perochan
DSi = kid Touch = adult
TruckWEB
Much more games for kids and everybody else on the DSi. More robust platform also. iPod Touch is for a mature audience only (meaning, someone who will be careful....).
Billus
DSi has POKEMON!!!! Every kid loves that right? Also it's the tried and proven device for younger kids as well as adults. I think giving an 8 year old an iPod touch is a bit too young, perhaps even a bit too rich. I just can't picture an 8 year old with it.
S00N3R FR3AK
The DSi is much more durable so I would say go with that.
Shadrack
If he were in his teens, I'd say an iPod Touch. But given his age, DS is much more durable and has more age appropriate titles on it.
soniqstylz
DSi, I wouldn't give an advanced piece of kit, which the iPhone is to an 8 year old. this.
