mrg
im trying to connect a computer to a cable modem through a router, there are already two computers connected through the router and they work fine, but the third one doesnt work. It says it can not renew the ip for the network adapter. i dont know much about this stuff so does anyone know how to fix this?
mAcOdIn Veteran Posted June 5, 2003 Veteran Share Posted June 5, 2003 Ok no biggie. The first thing I would check is verify that either: A) If using static IP's instead of DHCP that the new computer is not attempting to use the same IP as one of your other two computers. B)If using DHCP instead of static IP's I would ensure that your third computer is set to "obtain an ip address automatically" instead of manually specifying the IP. c)Check your cable it may be a crossover cable instead of a plain cable. Try replacing on of the working computers cable with the one that doesn't work and see if that computer can get an IP.
Sierra
+ if no DHCP: Make sure the Gateway is correct and chekc if the router even sees the 3rd one at all
dr3w2k3
If using DHCP, make sure the router is set to give out at least three IP addresses. Maybe it is set to only give out 2 at a time.
mrg
the router is using DHCP, and the third computer is set to obtain the ip automatically, i tried switching the cable, but it still didnt work. the third computer doesnt show up on the DHCP client list. Even though it is set to obtain the ip automatically, when i run ipconfig it already has an ip address which is no where close to the range that the router uses. ive tried ipconfig/release and ipconfig/renew, but i always get an error. LordSauron
If you are in XP run the "setup home network setup wizard" and point to the router as your gateway. Is the machine setup as part of a workgroup or is it trying to join a domain? Just a couple of thoughts.
mrg
i tried the network setup, but it doesnt ask me for a gateway. I do have the three computers networked now, and i can share files between them, but i still cant get an internet connection on the one. when i try to renew the ip, i get the error "An error occurred while renewing interface Local Area Connection 2 : An operation was attempted on something that is not a socket" i dont know if that gives you any clues or not. Does the third one have an IP Address? Start > Run > CMD > IPCONFIG If it does. check to see if the INTERNET CONNECTION FIREWALL is ON, and shut it down or any firewall for that matter on that pc. mrg
its got an ip address, but i found out it is an automatic private ip adress which is assigned by windows xp when the DHCP fails. all the firewalls are turned off.

Eversurf
Try to set it to a Static IP and try to ping your Gateway . If that works then try to reboot the router. Mine was a linksys and did that. I rebooted the router and then it was fine. If the static IP doesn't work then there is something wrong with your settings or NIC. Try to ping the local host address. 127.0.0.1 this will ensure that the layer 1- 3 are functioning properly. Then check the settings in the TCP/IP windows under network settings
mrg
I tried setting a static ip, and then i pinged the host and it worked which is more than ive ever gotten before, but i was still unable to get internet. i restarted the router, and that didnt work. I was able to ping 127.0.0.1, and ive checked over the settings in TCP/IP many times.
ElectricDemon
i've had the same problem (i say had, because i returned the router as it was the wrong type) I've re-ordered the correct router for my ADSL connection, but would still like to find out how to fix this problem, just in case I face it again with my new router setup
