AndyD
I'm sending a ton of pictures / videos to a friend on an external drive. I have it currently formatted to NTFS though. Do I have to worry about whether she'll be able to read the hard drive? Does she need any extra software
xtrabit racing
if she is using windows, of course.
Yusuf M. Veteran Posted October 13, 2009 Veteran Share Posted October 13, 2009 As far as I'm aware, Mac OS X can read an NTFS volume; however, it cannot write to it. So no, she won't need any extra software.
lunamonkey
Make sure "everyone" or is it "everybody" has read permissions.
Rudy
She'll be able to read and if she has Snow Leopard there's even a way to write
Death Proof
If she has Leopard, the she will be able to read all files on that volume. If she has snow leopard, then she will be able to both read & write on that HDD
Guest
i am assuming these are all public domain films, or home videos ;)
AndyD
i am assuming these are all public domain films, or home videos ;) It's pictures / videos from our month long Southeast Asia trip - 3 cameras worth. She's having trouble reading the dual layer discs I'm sending her and I don't have a Mac to confirm if she just doesn't know what she's doing. Thanks for being assumptive though :p Anyway, she only needs to read but I told her she can keep the drive since I have no need for it. Safe to assume she can format it even if it is NTFS? Please keep in mind that I've never used a Mac besides browsing in a store so not sure what to expect with the file system. Or perhaps I can format on my end within Windows so she doesn't have to worry about anything? Is there a format I can use that she'll have no trouble with. She doesn't have Snow Leopard. Not sure if she's planning on upgrading.
XerXis
if you really want to be sure you can always format it as FAT. However, ntfs should be fine

It was going really slow and then I figured out why. She was trying to download at cafes from wifi hot spots. I don't mind mailing her the drive. It's easier / quicker for the both of us. I just want to ensure compatibility so that she doesn't get frustrated
Alladaskill17
As stated previously, she should have no issues viewing the files on your NTFS formatted HDD, with that said if she has issues... hate on the Neowin community (impossible to truly do :p )
