Don?t use unauthorized Xbox 360 Storage Devices

When Preview Program members start receiving the Xbox 360 system update next week, one of the changes is that unauthorized Memory Units will no longer work with the Xbox 360. If you?ve moved your profile or saved games onto one to ?back it up,? you?d better move it back onto an authorized Xbox 360 storage device prior to taking the update. If you continue to use an unauthorized Memory Unit after the update, you will not be able to access your stored profile or saved games.

If you need help identifying officially licensed Xbox 360 storage devices or accessories you can read more about the licensed accessories program on Xbox.com

This had better be a joke, I got my 120gb hdd by formatting it to work with the 360. I hope that is not included or I will be extremel:angry:d

And whilst the rival encourage you to change HDD.

I just don't see why MS would want to do this...I mean does it really matter? Apart from getting more profits for their "approved storage devices"?

I am hoping this is only talking about the memory cards that are used with software to copy game saves and stuff and not the actual HDD that people make work with the 360. I dont think there is a real way to tell if the HD is legit or not but who knows. I know they will be shooting themselves in the foot if this is the case. They really need to lower the price of the "Official" hard drives....

Makes sense and its not really surprising. Yes, the prices on their HDDs are ridiculous, but that's not really a legit excuse to use unofficial ones.

@Nolimit - how are they shooting themselves in the foot? The people using unofficial HDDs aren't paying for official HDDs anyways, so it's not anymore of a loss. Not to mention the amount of people that actually attempt to use unofficial HDDs is insignificant compared to the amount with 360's.

This is not good news. I don't fancy paying for an official 120GB. I am going to wait and see if the update actually does detect modded hard drives. Hopefully they're talking about memory cards.

Well I for one refuse to pay what they are asking for their hard drives, for what they are asking you could get a 500+ GB HDD for that price. This is one thing they need to look at Sony for and let customers use there own hard drives...

You're kidding right? That's exactly a reason why you'd want to use your own HDDs. The entire purpose of locked drives and memory cards is to prevent the free market because they charge so much. If anyone started an anti-trust against them MS wouldn't last very long (but I'm sure they'd find some legal reason to justify it).

He did say "unauthorized memory units" not "unauthorized hard drives" Because basically, Your just flashing the hard drive with the same firmware as the real 360 120gb. So this makes me wonder. It would be amazing if they found a bypass. Because that would simply break all the rules. and Could cause alot of authorized hard drives to become bad by mistake. Interesting move by the Microsoft Xbox team.

You're joking right? First of all, since when is the Xbox a monopoly?

And there are other purposes... like preventing cheating.

Yeah, it's a reason, but not a legit one at all. It's going around the system in place. The prices suck, but that doesn't mean you get to go around it.

It's not one... yet but if they are trying to make it where you can only use their parts then yea I am pretty sure that would be considered one.

As far as the cheating what is stopping anyone from taking there official hdd or mem unit and putting game saves on there by connecting to a sata cable or other means? They have to be talking about something specific and I wish it would be more clear than this....

Yeah, but apparently Microsoft are the big evil corporation!

People really need to get off their damn high horses and really learn how business works.

I believe that last year's update already shut down that alley? I vaguely recall something about "profile spoofing" and "profile signing".

Using a different brand of hard drive somehow enables cheating? Lollercoaster! I'd love to know how! Who cares about cheating on console games, anyway? Not that any of this is relevant to me, since I'll never buy a 360. Still a highly amusing thread, though!

Who cares? I'm going to go with most of the 17 million+ that subscribe to Xbox Live. Also, if you don't care about the 360, why the **** are you in this thread?

If this indeed does also apply to HDD, not just memory cards, IMHO MS should be empathetic to the fact that I truly think more people than not did their own HDD upgrade because they felt slighted by the extravagant pricing MS decided to implement for the HDD upgrades. I know I heavily considered doing it myself multiple times, especially since I was a launch console owner who felt absolutely slighted. I honestly believe most of the people who chose to do this upgrade and put in their own HDD's were not doing it to just somehow "stick it to MS" and "get one over on the man," these people just were saying NO to the absolute joke prices MS were charging but saying YES to the fact they should have an option for more storage space at a reasonable price.

Because it's entertaining to see people like you get all ****ed off when you could have a) bought the official product or b) spent the money you dished into your 360 on an awesome video card and a 360 controller for your PC. Additionally, if the 17 million people supposedly subscribed to Live want to cheat, more power to them. People who cheat in console games only risk detracting from their own experience by lessening the challenge of the game, and it's really nobody's business if they choose to do so. Or are you saying they'll care because somehow they are all using non-MS-approved hard drives to cheat, and now they won't be able to? Nope, can't say I care about that, either.

Most of those with a flashed 120gb or 60gb drive bought a WD BEVS and used the same exact HD key so it will be easy to detect. Can't imagine it would be too hard to discover.
