If the HDD thing is true, then this is a really stupid move by MS. I can understand why they would do it, but really, the people who would need a bunch more storage like that are going to be some of your biggest customers (have lots of games to install, lots of DLC). Punishing them is like shooting yourself in the foot.

A Microsoft spokesman confirmed this morning via email that this particular move is targeted at memory units that plug into the front of the console, not unauthorized hard drives.

So This means that basically they're aiming at MU, and not the HDD.

Phew.....

Awesome, glad that's cleared up (Y)

On a related note do any 3rd parties make memory cards like Madcatz and the like? Back in the days of PS1/PS2 you could get 3rd party memory cards for much cheaper. Is that what MS is banning or is it like unlicensed Chinese knock offs?

Its basically that I can see right now, Microsoft just wants people to do the "official" and much pricier accessories. Its basically a cash grab :s

It isn't ridiculous at all. In fact, it makes perfect sense. Sony's business model is different than Microsoft's business model. Sony supports the use of third-party hard drives which is why they don't sell any separately. I mean, why would they? If someone wants a bigger hard drive for their PS3, they'll buy one and replace the one it came with.

And for what it's worth, for the longest time the PS3 has cost a lot more than the 360 not to mention here in AUS at least things like the controllers cost a fair bit more than the 360's.

I wouldn't say Sony is exactly an example of how to design and price things.

Sony's accessories are every bit as costly as the 360's, the only difference is the hard drive. But as someone has pointed out already, the 360's way of doing the harddrive does have it's advantages, like letting you take it and use it on another system without a problem. It's like a big portable memory card. You can't say the same about your cheaper off the shelf laptop HDD in the PS3. It's stuck to that system for good.

As the games on demand service and other content libraries grow more on Live MS will cut the price, they'd be stupid not to. Also the 250GB will find it's way out next year I bet, unless they want to keep that size HDD for the "super elite" limited edition bundles only.

I imagine they will just upgrade the SKU as they have done before from 20GB to 60Gb to 120GB then next year to 250GB standard.

That's all fine and dandy, but most people don't want to upgrade SKUs when their 360s work fine. If you bought a 20GB 360 because it was purchased when there was no game installs, there was no games on demand, you didn't have the video store, XBLA wasn't brimming full of content and you're only option is a $150 120GB, which will one day probably not be enough again, it's no wonder you turn to mods.

Imagine the 250GB drive is another $150, and you upgraded from the 20GB to 120GB, that's $300 spent on hard drives, minus what you might be able to make from selling the 20/120GB. $150 for a 250GB hard drive is still vastly over priced.

Hard drives aren't proprietary pieces of equipment, MS just sticks a generic brand WD drive inside, it's not a specially branded MS drive. Where as at least with things like controllers you begrudgingly admit they are uniquely made for the console and splash out. Okay MS put them inside a caddy, but a plastic caddy? Probably being knocked up in China for $8-12 a piece.

I've got a feeling MS won't ban hard drives, but will just turn a blind eye because they know the hardcore that know how to do it most likely make up a lot of sales on XBL, and it's more likely the casuals will be those without much knowledge that think $150 is actually an okay price. That and I have a feeling MS can't actually tell if your hard drive is modded, the bin files are apparently identical for all drives. Cheap knock off memory cards probably don't use the same equipment as the official branded ones, where as the hard drive mod uses the same line of hard drives MS use.

And what if you can clone (firmware level) an original MU? may be at this point unofficial MU's identified with the system using a generic name and because of this MS can block them, I mean, they can't add anything new to MU's because of backwards compatibility isn't it? you can't stop China!!

Yeah, but apparently Microsoft are the big evil corporation!

People really need to get off their damn high horses and really learn how business works.

Or play on something else.
