Microsoft issues XBL permabans to illegit Forza 3, Borderlands players

DO NOT PIRATE VIDEOGAMES.

Ok, with that out of the way, here?s an after-school-special-friendly example of why pirating?s for suckers. See, if you somehow managed to nab an illegitimate early copy of Forza 3 or Borderlands, you?re cruising for an Xbox Live permaban.

?You know, when you play a pre-release title on LIVE when I know you shouldn?t have it, it?s not hard for me to figure out,? tweeted Xbox Live Director of Policy and Enforcement Stephen Toulouse.

Now, if your retailer of choice merely broke the game?s street date, that?s another story. Toulouse explained:

?Don?t worry folks, anyone who bought a copy early is ok. In general, if you got a receipt, play away. These are illegit copies we?re hitting.?

He said nothing, however, about people who stole either game from a retailer. Our guess? You scoundrels are probably in the clear. Well, online anyway. But the police probably won?t touch your precious Gamerscore. VG247ds-players/"]VG247[/url]

WHY would you go and play a leaked pirated version of a game on Xbox Live a week before release? lol. These people clearly deserve any bans that come their way.

Nice to see them acting quickly too.

What about promo copies for magazines? I played Darkness and Lost Planet before release. Do I deserve a ban? I had no receipt after all.

How can they actually tell?

Of course, but getting your account permanently banned from XBL to play a game a week early? Doesn't really seem worth it to me.

Chances are it's hot air anyway

From what we've been led to believe if a game is a retail build and passes CRC checks it's identical, no way to tell.

Unless MS just randomly ban then tell people to provide a receipt to get unbanned.

Your console gets banned, not account. Either way if they are like me and could give less of a **** about XBL (Been silver for a year go me!) I doubt it'd be a loss.

Sure that's not from the Halo 3: ODST french leak, since you know, it was totally obvious who had downloaded it?

There's a chance one of the copies is bad, maybe review code or just a bad CRC.

No one knows if they are properly legit till the retail copies hit and they can be compared.

Like it says above you couldn't just ban everyone playing a game early, people do get things legitimately early. I got MGS4 about 6 days before it came out.

Soo true, it's about time they start banning accounts instead of consoles. However I dunno if it's just banning accounts for this individual case, or if any person from now on caught with copies will get an account ban.

except when you get banned you cant sign in at all. No gold, no silver, no updates, no demos, no nothing.

Demos can be downloaded of torrents/newsgroups burned to disc and played. The updates mostly include things which require gold anyway (lol twitter).

Of course they don't ban random people, this is Microsoft, they obviously have their methods of copy protection on the disc, which if cracked, and used on xbox live sends them a red flag.

Press copies and review copies show up as such so anyone with a press copy would be fine, plus it is generally given that the reviewers sign in with a specific account so that MS can monitor the situation.

I don't now how they will persue this however, unless as they say you can provide a copy receipt of said purchase and if you cannot then ban, if you can they then go after the shop in question who sold it early. But a perma ban straight off is a bit disconcerting, still I suppose it is there network/console so they can do what they choose.

Oh please. People went online with a game which isn't due out for two weeks and apparently they are just perma banning everyone regardless and expecting you to prove your self innocent.

If they did have a CP on the discs we would have seen a lot more bans more frequently. Fallout 3 causes a ruckus last year because someone leaked a review copy of the game, hence the epic ban hammer came out.

Word on the interwebz is the NTSC copy of Forza 3 that leaked could be a review copy, it did hit like what 2 weeks before release? PAL copy was 10 days I think.

ul AB :p

Regardless of what caused it. It's natural selection, if you go online with ANY game 2 weeks before release you're asking for them to check you out. :)
